Was the top sealed when you got it or are you living in a house full of students with a bad sense of humour?

To me, all bottled water smells (and tastes) 'odd'. Apart from the fact that I already pay for perfectly potable water from the tap, I don't honestly see the point of paying 500 times more for the same thing in a bottle (figure from Thames Water).

I think the smell you're getting is probably coming from the type of glue they use to stick the label on with - since I'm guessing you don't normally go around sniffing packaging labels it may be that you've only just noticed the smell of the glue.

Flavour and aroma can leach through
"Plastic water bottles are very convenient for carting water around when we are on the go, as they don't break if we drop them. However, it is worth paying attention to the type of plastic your water bottle is made of, to ensure that the chemicals in the plastic do not leach into the water. If you taste plastic, you are drinking it, so get yourself another bottle.

To be certain that you are choosing a bottle that does not leach, check the recycling symbol on your bottle. If it is a #2 HDPE (high density polyethylene), or a #4 LDPE (low density polyethylene), or a #5 PP (polypropylene), your bottle is fine. The type of plastic bottle in which water is usually sold is usually a #1, and is only recommended for one time use. Do not refill it. Better to use a reusable water bottle, and fill it with your own filtered water from home and keep these single-use bottles out of the landfill."

Add all that to the transportation you dont know what they were stored next to.
There was a documentary on a few weeks/months ago where customs stopped a lorry suspected of hiding illegal immigrants and they knew they had been in there because of the human waste! This happened to be new sofa's but I wouldn't want one of them in my lounge! yuk
