Hi. We have just moved house and I have a bare patch of soil (4x5 metre)in the middle of the garden where the previous owner had a fountain or bird bath. I would like to replace this area with lawn. Is it too late to sow grass seed at this time of the year?

Welcome to GC Jimmy. No it's not to late to sow seed. The minimum temperature for sowing I believe is about 52 Fahrenheit if that's any help. But don't forget to water every day that it doesn't rain until it is established. :)

I would have said its too late for Spring sown grass, and a bit early for Autumn sown. My recommendation would be that you wait a bit (September), by then the weed seeds will be shutting down for Winter and your grass will get started without the weed competition [that it would get if sown in the Spring], plus you won't have to molly-coddle it with watering etc., by next spring it will be fully established and you probably won't have to water it at all next year.
