    I think pretty much everyone acknowledges that the building of the British empire was not done by nice means, and that Britain was (past tense) responsible for a lot of slavery and bloodshed. The only reason we don't have every former colony queuing up to kick our heads in is because over the last few decades a lot of effort has gone in to putting things right. One of those steps was to give everybody the same rights, including the right to be treat as equals. Now you would ask the black and Asian volunteers to either not take part at all because of their appearance, or to take part but accept a subservient role making a great show of bowing down to their 'white superiors'?

    Whether they should or should not be here is of no interest to todays society, people feel threatened by their sheer numbers and very resentful.:mad:

          And indeed the whole of the UK, as they keep telling us, except when there's the occasional slip of the tongue by an official who says how great it is for London:)

              I thought the entire nationwide torch parade was a triumph as it really involved people on a local level. Thousands turned out to watch it arrive in Leicester and got up at 6 the next morning to see it leave again. I was ringing the bells as it arrived so didn't see it and even i was motivated to get up early to witness it.
              Weymouth is getting a good look in even as I type, as will other venues. I don't mind the Olympics being a bit London-centric as I think, on occasions like this, the capital has an iconic status for the whole nation.

                I thought the corgi scenes were extremely funny, but goodness knows what Johnny Furriner thought about that particular British in-joke!

                To be fair, in exactly the same way as they refer to the Beijing games,or the Barcelona games. Nobody ever refers to the Chinese games or the Spanish games, do they?

                  I was going to make that point myself but you beat me to it.

                  If anyone else in the country wants it next time round, you're welcome to it.
                  OK so I'm in Kent, but its close enough to put me out of work.

                      In the interest of historical accuracy yes i would. If i was Indian, or black or something then i would take the same stance too i would not want my ancestors suffering to be whitewashed over infront of the entire world for the purpose of the olympics opening cereomy. I understand that it creates a little bit of a dilema in todays equal rights multicultural society but i didnt decide on the theme of the opening ceremony. I think it would have been more effective if the black and asians played little part in the opening ceremony untill post 1945, when they could have came out on the stage in hoards and hoards to demonstrate in the integration of the different cultures in the modern country. They didnt have to exclude blacks or asians completely and/or have them playing roles that are not suitable for them.

                      What games would we put in it though? How about:

                      * Catch the sheep
                      * Sheer the sheep
                      * Grumbling
                      * 100m sprint - in a field of crazy cows
                      * High jump - the fence/hedge at the perimeter of the field of crazy cows

                      Oh, and I'm not sure what you'd call it, but it wouldn't be a Yorkshire games if we didn't have a game of competitive debating who had the hardest youth. It is well known that every Yorkshiremen had to walk 30 miles in bare feet in a hail storm every day to do 25 hours down pit before school, then they'd still have to walk ome, and milk t cows and feed t chickens before going t bed on a bale o straw with nowt more than a slice of stale bread and drippin for supper.
