The new flowerbed I made last year is flourishing despite the best efforts of the rabbits and one of two plants lost over the winter, surpising given its mildness. BUT - neither of my two paeonies has flowered. One I moved from another bed, where it had been for about three years and hadn't flowered there either. The other was newly planted. Both look quite healthy, if not as luxuriant as I wpould like. What stops paeonies from flowering? The soil is on the alkaline side, which didn't seen to bother paeonies at my previous house, and it is exposed and very windy. Do I give them another chance or just call it a day now?

I've never grown peonies Lorna, but I believe they take a few years to mature before producing flowers. Especially if you've had to move one recently. If they are happy and healthy please don't give up on them,

I reckon that's the most likely cause too. When I move paeonies they normally flower the following year no matter how much abuse I give them, but I always plant them very "shallow"

But now I come to think of it, at our previous house we buried two paeonies under three feet of soil and they came up through it!

I've got seven different Peonies and had some for three decades, Lorna, and I garden on sandy neutral soil. I found that established Paeonies don't mind being moved when my wife started moving them around so much I told her the paeonies needed suitcases.:snork: The crowns of all my Paeonies are just below the surface and seem to like it. Yours obviously won't flower now this year, but I would give them a regular feed of Tomato Feed until the leaves start to brown and wither so as to give them a boost for next year. Then when you start to see growth next year feed them regularly again with Tomato Feed and they should flower for you.:hapydancsmil:

Thanks, Armandii. I do hope I can get them to flower as I do love them.

They should flower with little TLC and persuasion, Lorna. Just give them a regular feed and then see what happens next year....cross your fingers!!
