Just interested watergarden why the shape makes a difference. Do frogs or wildlife dislike square pool's ? What size do the prefer best ?

The shape of the area you have is triangular.
A triangular pool (or any other pool with "pointed corners") is always a bad idea.

The wildlife will not stand next to it, shaking their heads and sucking through their teeth going "its the wrong shape 'gov"
You can't put a hole where a hole don't belong, don't dig there, dig it elsewhere, dig it round because you don't want it square (cue the music).........

Sorry watergarden, you have completly lost me.

Are you seriously saying that wildlife would not go to a small kidney shaped pool that has been planted with marginals just because the sides of the path are straight ?

So all the threads i have seen on this forum where people have just stuck in a small bucket to encourage wildlife is different i suppose.

Remember, this area has not been planted, the area's surround are not yet established.

Surely as people and gardeners, we should be encouraging this type of thing wherever in the garden it may be ?

I say again, if i plant a small pool, are you saying that no birds, no frogs, no bugs will visit this pool in this position ?

        Sorry.

        No.

Different to your situation, yes. They want advice regarding a "bucket". You want advice about a pond.

In my lifetime I have seen countless ponds, water features and fountains, some are right (no problems) some are wrong (wrong pump, too shallow, too deep, bad location etc) You asked for opinions, based on what ponds etc I have previously seen, your choice of location is not a good one.

The comment in my last post

"The wildlife will not stand next to it, shaking their heads and sucking through their teeth going "its the wrong shape 'gov"
You can't put a hole where a hole don't belong, don't dig there, dig it elsewhere, dig it round because you don't want it square (cue the music)......."

was intended to be light hearted and amusing (The shape of the hole, reminded me of said Bernard Cribbins song.

Well, you can't win them all, Freddy, be nice!!:heehee: For me, Mr G, it would be the wrong place and not where I would contemplate putting a wild life pool, but I can see your reasoning in that the spot is always holding water. It's just, to me, it's not going to look right there. If you put a small pond there the law of Nature says it will attract insects but it's location isn't promising for bigger stuff in the sense of getting them to stay. I'm sure they will visit but they won't stay because of the location and I think Watergarden is right in that the formal triangle of concrete will make the informal wild life pool clash.

He's right you know, his not nice side is so not nice that the nice side won't talk to the not nice side unless it knows that the not nice side has already signed an agreement that the not nice side will not hold the nice side responsable for any actions the nice side might take after disagreeing with the not nice side that might actually turn the nice side into the not nice side thereby cancelling out both the nice and not nice sides and creating a paradox.
