    Another one is, Curried Potatoes. Same as the Garlic spuds, but with curry paste over...yummy

      Which incidentally is almost the same thing as Patatas Bravas, the Spanish version.

      In the Canary Isles they have another one, but my taste buds which are usually good at doing a 'spectragraph' to reverse engineer a recipe, failed. In that case the spuds are in some sort of green sauce. Its very salty and herby but I couldn't put my finger on what it was.

      Anyway, so far the barbie will consist of veggie burgers, tinned hot dogs, bread and spuds. And beer.:dbgrtmb:

          Tip for the actual BBQ. If you are using charcoal as opposed to gas, get the largest food tin you can (we got one from a restaurant) so lid is off and poke holes around the base near the bottom with a can opener or whatever. Put some charcoal and a firelighter in it and get it going. Once red spread out on the grill and add more charcoal. Great for a windy day when you just can't get a fire lit.

          Foodwise ... potato salad and coleslaw (best home made but A-OK to buy ready made to save time and hassle) and corn on the cob pre-done in the micro then on the grill for a few minutes, smothered with butter and black pepper. And don't forget a mixed bowl of salad! I always do home-made hamburgers but do them the day before and refrigerate layered between foil .... flavours meld together. We prefer a mix of beef, pork and lamb mince with just some salt, pepper and Worcestershire Sauce. I never add egg or bread to bind as the various meats will bind on their own. I also never use prime beef as it does not have enough fat so the burgers cook properly.

          Don't forget the desserts, key lime pie, cheesecakes, etc ... and individual ice cream cones or lollies for the kids.

                I don't often have a BBQ, but when I do, below is what I do:

                Preparation

                I don't like wasting food for a BBQ,

                Ask your guests what they like when they confirm they are coming (more to the point, what they don't like) Ziggy's Idea is good, but if no one is a vegetarian, its pointless. (or you could make too many)

                Not all people like hot dogs, (That's a proper "boil it to cook" hot dog, not a sausage in a roll) Ask first.

                Put Ketchup etc on a table and let people add it if they want. On 2nd thoughts leave it in the bottle would be better. Do Leave ketchup etc in its bottle, if you put some in a bowl with a spoon (as in restaurants) some joker will drop the spoon, lick it and put it back, or some one will drop cigarette ash in it.

                Put a kitchen roll on the table, cheaper than napkins, and doesn't blow away like napkins will.


                Drinks

                You should know who drinks what (see prep above) put lots of cans (soft drink and Lager in the fridge the day before, nothing worse than warm lager or diet coke)

                I have found it best to designate some one as drinks person for the first couple of hours, to make sure everyone has a drink (from when they arrive)


                Food

                I calculate mine @ 3 burgers and 2 sausages / person. Might not sound much but when you have 15 people turn up that's 45 burgers and rolls (Obviously you buy more than required, to the number in a packet)

                Buy pre cut "burger buns" and never butter them, they are quicker, to serve and less prep. You can also buy long rolls for sausages. (Not all people like butter, (some like spread) and burger restaurants don't butter their rolls)

                If you are buying the food, buy the best you can, "own supermarket brand" burgers don't go down well.

                Don't have too many options, i.e fish, burgers, sausages, crisps, dips etc. I stick to Burgers and sausages, reason is, less waste and less to clean up and shorter cooking times, and they are coming for a BBQ, not a restaurant meal. (If you do some one will always say "I wanted that" and an argument starts)


                Cooking

                If you are having sausages, always run a knife down them, so you can cook them "open" This ensures they get cooked properly.

                If you have chicken, cook it in the oven, then bring it out and put it on the bbq for 10 or so minutes. (You don't want food poisoning)

                Buy 4 packs of "plastic cheese slices" Put one on each burger just after its cooked, leave it until it just melts, flip into a roll. (Most people like a cheese burger, granted, not all will)


                Other

                Have an MP3 Player with lots of general music on it, and buy an "amplifier" for it or borrow one. That way you can have back ground music all the time ( What I have )

                If its going into the night, consider lighting, a couple of [​IMG]

                Or similar. But always get enclosed ones.

                Chairs, always make sure you have enough chairs (Plastic ones will suffice) for everyone to sit on should they want to. If you don't have enough, perhaps borrow some?

                Rubbish.
                Keep a black bin liner near you, so you can throw any rappers in it, and folk can put in their empty bottles / cans.

                Kids
                If there are a lot of small children, they do like a game or two, such as pass the parcel. Or if its safe to do so in your garden, hide a packet of sweets (all the same sweets to avoid argument), one for each child, when each one finds one they have to come back and sit down. When I say hide, an example would be a packet on top of a flower pot. (not under it) and the flower pot just sitting on the ground.

                Cake
                A couple of black forest gateaus seem to go down well, but do buy some paper plates and plastic forks as well

                Above all, enjoy yourself.

                Dips. As with ketchup, people may drop the spoon etc, or worse still use crisp to scoop some out, eat it, then use same crisp to get more or even worse, some of the other dip,

                  i pop sweetcorn in foil with a dab of butter and a touch of water and cook on the edge of the embers ( dont forget to turn)
                  if you have one of those fire pit types i always like to sit around it with friends and BBQ chinese style, you buy a couple of packs of chicken wings or drummers and have a selection of sauces that can be pasted on to them, pop on to a skewer sit around the Pit cooking your own food how you like it,(veggie skewers work just as well ) and yes i do burgers and stuff too,

                    Re chicken - drumsticks and wings work very well but, as watergarden says, do most of the cooking in the oven. This also saves time and allows you to get more things done at the same time. I make different marinades and have the chicken prepared the day before - just coat them and leave them in a bowl overnight. You can buy ready made marinades.

                    The two most popular ones I make are Tandoori and Lemon and Honey but there are loads of smokey BBQ ones you can buy. Wings are pretty cheap and cook quickly. Packs of the small drumsticks can be almost as cheap. Do them in the oven and not under the grill and delegate someone to keep an eye on them.

                    Assuming you're using a charcoal BBQ, getting the charcoal hot and burned down to the right level for cooking can sometimes take longer than you think. There's an easy way to speed it up :thumbsup:. A hairdryer on an extension lead works brilliantly. One the charcoal starts to burn just aim the air from the dryer at the coals. You'll be amazed at how quickly it works (just like a blacksmith using bellows) but be careful about blowing ash around. This is also good to know when you have got halfway through the cooking and find you need a lot more charcoal on the BBQ. Lift off the rack with the food on it and blast away :dbgrtmb:

                      If you like lamb, try this served with Waitrose grand mange and salad. I cook mine in foil for 6hrs, then crisp up for 15mins. The meat just melts in your mouth.:smile:



                      This was back in January, the BBQ is made from an old childrens swing, a bit of reinforcing mesh, and an old metal shelf.
