One of the partially ripe tomatoes that I picked off one of the plants I ditched decided to split (a couple of hours after coming off the plant), so rather than waste it completely I decided to scrape out all of the seeds inside onto a plate.

Do I need to put them in sieve and run them under the tap, or will they dry out ok if left alone?

Are they likely to be viable for next year?

They are moneymakers from a packet of seeds bought earlier in the year if it makes any difference?

They'll all more than likely germinate, but i'd be inclined to buy a fresh packet of a more flavoursome variety. JWK will tell you the best ones.

I just arrange the seeds in lines on dry kitchen paper. Come next year I cut the paper into small squares and pop those in pots.

      Easy peasy. Cheers, Tony.

Only for the hell of it - are they not a good variety then?

FC, I pick this many twice a day now - outside - in the window box. I have 3 in a 10" pot as well that are trussing like crazy. They are about 16" x 16" in growth and taste good. Fed with weak Tomorite most days,

            Hi there FC.

I have to be honest and say I've never tried them myself, but that's because they are reckoned by regular pundits to be very 'average' on the flavour front. I guess it depends what you want from your tomatoes. As far as I'm concerned, flavour is everything. I tend to only grow hybrid varieties, so can't save the seed because they wouldn't come 'true'. I'm not suggesting you shouldn't have a go at saving and growing your own seed for a bit of fun, but why waste space on an average variety?

              Hiya Jenny.

It wasn't long ago you were fretting about whether or not you would actually get any toms;) Very nice looking toms, btw:blue thumb:

Thanks Freddy - fair comment too :) I only picked the Moneymakers because it was a variety that I remembered my mum growing when I was a kid.

What variety would you suggest for a well flavoured, all rounder sort of tomato (but not cherry toms, as I am not over keen)?

Thank you Freddy. I value your comment as you are a seasoned Tom. grower and I appreciated your progress reports very much. I well recall my doubts re: indoor legginess, outdoor gales - could they cope? and the odd panic when coming home to complete collapse through lack of water. Then, that little wee Summer we had turned 'em from brats into guys with character.
              And it's paying off :yahoo:

                Hiya FC.

A bit difficult to suggest one off the top of my head, as people have different tastes, and opinions. As a non-hybrid, Alicante always did ok for me. Nowhere near as flavoursome as the Sungold(cherry) I grow now, but a decent all-rounder. JWK (John) will no doubt have more suggestions, as he grows lots of different varieties, and has a methodical approach to taste trials.

                Cheers...Freddy

Thanks Freddy - I think I am going to have to do quite a bit of planning for next year, both in terms of fruit & veg and flowers, as there have been some successes and a good few failures this year; I know the weather has played a big part, but I think picking the wrong stuff or wrong varieties hasn't helped in some cases.

I think most of us have had a bad year, I know I have!

I've sort of given up on this year to a degree - but also trying to learn some lessons to hopefully ensure a good year next year.
