Sorry not sure were to put this..

Hi all.. a friend online has freaked out about me putting wisteria flowers in the house. I cut some off one of our large trees at the back & made a lovely arrangement looks great smells heavenly and put in our lounge..I put that picture on facebook as looks great..as a lot of friends are following our progress.S he has freaked and said take it out its unlucky..Cant get hold of her and havent really found anything that really says doing this is unlucky. Is it or is this a personal freak out ..!! sat here thinking what the hell..hoping someone can tell me is this true or just a personal thing? this is the picture that I put on..?

FC's right that is definitely Buddleia. Your friend is probably thinking about lilac, which is a similar shaped flower head. Lilac is supposed to be unlucky but I don't know why. :)

Hi kels, I think you made a typing error. That's not wisteria but it is buddleia :). There's no reason to keep it out of the house.

A lot (but not all) of the folklore around not having certain plants in the house was developed to prevent people picking flowers of plants that were endangered.

That certainly is not a problem with buddleia. The other reasons, quite often, were because they were poisonous or attracted insects. Flying insects do like buddleia but if you've chwecked that they aren't on them when you pick them then I would just go ahead.

Any other superstitions are just that - superstitions. Some of them are because certain plants were put on graves or seemed to flourish in graveyards. Buddleia grows anywhere so would also grow in graveyards. There are lots of other reasons but I've never heard of one about buddleia.

Edit: the previous two posts weren't there when I started typing.

That doesn't look like wisteria, more like lilac.
Lilac does have some unlucky connotations, because it was said to be used to mask the smell of the recently deceased. :yikes:
It's all rubbish really, you do what you like.:)

the liliac in the house was used to cover the smell of dead peoples in the old time .
wow what a confusion kels ....you have some Buddleia that you call wisteria and that your friend think it`s liliac.

I agree about the luck this plot thickens. I wasnt sure what the trees were.Had 3 people from one garden centre they said was wisteria. They were looking at the soil & ground friend of a friend. Someone else came and we had order fencing from another centre. They were carrying through to the back garden saw the trees and made comment also saying wisteria. I dont know didnt really look into it now everyone agrees they are lol. Do I need to take a close up of this flower and leave to confirm this or is everyone in agreement that its a budlea.. it seems that way so far :)

Kels the one in your profile picture is a wisteria , the picture of flowers in the pot are buddleia......and to make you even sure , buddleia is in flower now , while wisteria or liliac only flower in april/may.
that means impossible to cut wisteria flower at the moment.

I have no idea what the people saw in your garden that they identified as wisteria, but on this rare occasion I am 100% sure that the flower in the pic is Buddleja.
