Totally agree on others hearing your business; as I said, I'm not an advocate.
Disagree on the getting sacked being the worst; that person would be seeking a reference for future employment. From recent news reports, it takes quite a bit for a GP to be struck off. :dunno:

Something which bugs me even more than GP receptionists are the number of people/organisations who wish to ID me from my date of birth and then, get snitty because I won't tell them. Their argument is: "Well, I already know it, I just need you to confirm it!"
My argument is: "Well, I already know it too, but, I have no intentions of repeating it for the world and his wife to overhear while I confirm it over the 'phone!!"

I must put in a good word for our surgery. Although we now get the recorded voice asking us to press the relevant number the first question asked by the receptionist is "Is it urgent"?

If I feel that I want to see the doctor quickly then I say "Yes" and the next question is "Are you able to tell me what the problem is?"

My usually answer is "Yes, but I would rather speak to the doctor about it in the surgery". They always give me an appointment the same day, without further questions.

Having said that, it's not a frequent occurrence.

Most of the time I get through to the receptionist I say that I'm happy to see the practice nurse who, in most things, is as experienced (or more) than the doctors. She, or one of her colleagues, allocates a lot more time as well. That includes advice about lifestyle and other matters - which the doctor doesn't have time to include. If she thinks it requires a doctor she calls one in.

I once opted to see a "nurse practitioner"as they call them at my surgery.
The appointment was 45 min late, due to her spending so much time with patients, and she gave me antibiotics for gout.
Because it wasn't in my big toe, it must be an infection she said, hence the antibiotics.
I wasn't prepared to spend 7 quid on something I knew was not going to work so threw the prescription away.

I've now learned my lesson, if I want to see a doctor, I want to see a doctor, not someone who will lecture me on lifestyle, I get enough of that in the papers TV etc.

Dentists are going down the same road, talk you to death and scared to pull a tooth.

Pete - know what you are saying about Dentists![IMG]

I am trying to get a broken tooth extracted and a root canal done but dentist won't do it until I have seen my GP and asked advice about antibiotics needed because I am told that as I have had a hip replacement op then any dental surgery needs to be covered by appropriate meds.

I am allergic to quite a few of these so nobody wants to prescribe. I have had the afore mentioned 'telephone consultation' but the GP, whom I have never spoken to before, almost laughed at my request.

Looks like I'm going to have to try again and insist on seeing a GP
and just hope I don't end up with a raging toothache again before I get any treatment! :cry3:

Anyone been to a Dentist in the last 2 years, that hasn't been referred to the Dental Hygeinist for a scraping of the Plaque layer - which seems to involve hacking away at the gums and tooth surface, causing untold future damage?

Goodness, couldn't cope with that again ... here they use ultrasound to clean teeth, absolutely painless!

That sounds good Victoria. As I have only just registered with this dentist I shall have to see what they offer. If they have ultrasound cleaning I bet it's only for private patients!

Here is a copy of a posting last week from an expat site I am on here and I have personally corresponded with this person for years ...

"A year ago I went to a dentist in Tomar in pain. I had a total of 3 visits, all lasting between 40 and 50 mins. State of the art - she used a computer to "photograph" all my teeth (the year before a UK dentist had taken an x-ray of one tooth and charged £40!).

I had the painful tooth drilled out, the root removed, a temporary rubber filling and then that removed and my tooth built up. Total cost of €145.
5 years ago another UK dental nurse charged £35 for cleaning."

This is not a private dentist she visited.

I have ultrasound cleaning done. Although I'm registered as NHS at the dentists I have to pay about £40. It takes about half an hour. Not much difference in hourly rate than the man that services my car (the main dealers, who I don't use, charge about £150 per hour!).

Pete, I suppose it depends on the experience and qualifications of your practice nurse. :dunno:

I must be lucky. My surgery, although having the most bizarre methods of booking an appointment, will readily book a telephone consult and most of the time I am quite happy with that. On the rare occasion I get Mrs Nosy (there's only one in our surgery) I can usually fob her off with a simple explanation like "It's to do with a blood test I had recently". As for actual appointments, they used to be a nightmare as they only had one week of the practice diary made up at a time and that not until Friday am! so they only accepted appointments for the next week on Fridays! Tough luck if you're at work or something and cannot get to a phone! Don't know what's changed but I changed my tactic and now start brightly with "I don't suppose I have a cat in hell's chance of getting an appointment with Dr Q in the next week or so, have I?". Amazingly, they almost always seem to be able to find me a slot somewhere, despite her being part time!

However, I am always happy with telephone consults as most of the doctors know me and know I am a long serving nurse and are happy to discuss my situations like professionals and not be patronising to me! Makes it a bit awkward though when they ask me what antibiotics I want, though but!

This is exactly the reason I am not happy with telephone consultations.
If the doctors knew me it would be different but as I am fairly new to the practice
                  they don't know me! :wallbang:
