I have another, that came to mind the other night.

The house I lived in as a child backed onto a large graveyard, which had loads of bushes and stuff dotted around it; there was a rhododendron (at least, that's what I think it was) bush that was absolutely massive, and boys being boys we clambered into the middle of it to discover that it was essentially a hollow ball with foliage all round the outside and nothing in the middle.

From the inside we could peek out and see the graveyard gates, and the road, so we could see what was going on whist hiding away like wee spies - so, we scavenged all sorts of bits of wood and ply etc and made ourselves a wee gang hut / den in the middle of this bush.

All was great until the October when the weather changed and started to get colder - so, again boys being boys, we decided a camp fire was the ideal way to keep warm.................. in the middle of the bush, with all of our wooden constructions held together mostly with string.

You guessed it - within minutes there was a blazing fire engulfing the whole bush, and a half a dozen boys legging it up the graveyard to get as far away as possible.

We never did get caught, but felt as guilty as hell for a long time afterwards.

Are you pleading GCs' forgiveness for this caper FC?
Or just getting a retro kick out of "confessing"?

Sounds like it was an accident FC, unlike my mate deliberately setting fire to the makeshift tent we had made, while we were in it.

I can still remember feeling the heat on my cheek & the realisation of what he'd done. I also remember his Dad, a huge Irishman, standing on my doorstep, holding his son by the ear with one hand and holding a shotgun cartridge, that his son had nicked from my Brother's room in the other.

He said "I caught Eamon trying to open this with a hammer"

So, retrospectively, things could have been a lot worse FC, you're forgiven. Rhododendrons shouldn't be allowed in Graveyards anyway, they swamp the graves.

I'd say forgiven FC. Clearly an accident. The fire probably wont have killed the bush, as the heat wont have been enough to bake the roots. Most likely you damaged the top growth and someone would have needed to come along later and cut off all the fire damaged top growth, and next spring, chances are the stump would start producing new growth.

When I lived in Sheffield, I used to spend a lot my spare time cycling in the peak district. On one route, every couple of years the rhododendrons were cut right down to nothing in autumn and would start to regrow the following spring.

Forgiveness please - although this thread is to blame for bringing it back to mind.

Mind you, when I think back on all the stupid things I've done over the years, its amazing that I haven't done myself a mischief.

Once on a day trip to London I got a Japanese couple told off. We were in an arcade and I kicked the two pence machine which the Japanese couple were using the other side of. The alarm went off and a guard came over and had a yell at the Japanese pair, don't think they understood what the guard was saying but look terrified nevertheless.

Me and the OH walked off quite quickly and from then on reminds me that I ruined that couple's holiday.

I didn't even get any 2p's from the kick either. Those things must have a magnet at the edge or something! :wallbanging:
