I know the moths wouldn't survive being cooked.:) But I'd like to stop them hatching out into the flour before I get chance to bake with it.

I remember I had Psocids in my ordinary flour. They are common and quite harmless.
?? What moths get into yours??

Indian meal moths. (Cashew nuts are just as bad as the flour.)

Yuk, just Googled them. Revolting, but difficult to prevent it seems as they feed on the grain whilst still on the plant

    Hi Sheal,

When we bought our Pannie four years ago the granary bread we eat had gone up to £1.19 a loaf from Mr T's shop so i did some research on line about the cost of home made loaves and someone had worked it out at 9p per loaf but not sure if that is correct and considering the fact that the cost of leccie, and the bare ingrediants{flour, yeast etc}it would probably work out more now:smile:

If you do get one you will find the loaves dry out quicker than the sliced carboard stuff that supermarkets sell as the home baked bread isn't full of preservaties to keep the loaves fresh like the ones you get in the shops:snork:

I've never done a cost excercise. I charge the girls I work for on Thursdays £1.40 per loaf and they are happy to pay for it. I make a Ciabatta with olives, sun dried tomatoes and Schwartz Spicy Italian seasoning which I glaze and sprinkle with Parmesan. They like that in the Summer. It's different and home made is so much nicer IMO,

For a bog standard white or wholemeal loaf, I would say about 25p per loaf at the moment, which depends on which flour you buy - if you went for supermarket own brand basic stuff, that would probably drop to around 15p per loaf :)

More than anything else, its the taste for me. In the winter, I will quite often set my slow cooker up to make a stew and then set the timer on the breadmaker so that the bread is ready at the same time as the stew; the whole lot can happen whilst I am out at work, and we arrive home in the evening to the smell of fresh bread and stew :yummy:

Yesss FC. That's as near to heaven as you can get. And it gives you something GOOD to think about at work when the day 'ain't goin' quite how you would like it to,

I worked it out on the cost of the hazelnut and walnut bread, excluding the leccy was 29p! The walnuts and hazelnuts were from aldi, and literally a spoonful of each went in. You can't get a chewy, cheap loaf for that in the supermarket.

Even if it cost the same as a mass produced loaf, I would still prefer to use my bread machine for one very straightforward reason ... *I* know what's gone into it ;)

And I utilise mine in the same way as fat controller with the variation of weekends when the timer is set so we have either a fresh loaf to wake up to, or some dough so I can whack it into the oven some fresh baked cinnamon rolls.

Thanks all. It's pretty obvious that it's cheaper than shop bought. That in turn is a bonus for me as the cost of bread is dearer here because of the cost of shipping to the island. :)
