Rye bread

    I had a wonderful rye loaf from lidl a few weeks ago. Don't know whether it has any wheat in with it though.

    Both Lidl and Aldi sell rye bread here but it is the heavy black type and in my opinion only good toasted. The Portuguese use rye and corn so fortunately for me fresh light loaves are always available in all supermarkets. In saying that, Aldi also sells freshly-baked bread here delivered daily from a local source. Lidl actually have a little glass 'room' next to the bread counter where they 'bake' bread but I think they get it in part-baked and then finish it off freshly so if you are on in there at the right moment you get warm bread, yum!

    We sometimes make our own rye bread with added caraway seeds.

      My husband could eat only Rye ,we got Rye and Spelt from "Morrisons" bakery dept,it was nice even i could eat it,Sorry I don`t like the "Aldi,Lidl" bread at all ,still got one in freezer its very dense !!!

      I'm a bit limited for large shops here all we have is Marks and Spencer, Tesco's and a local firm Shoprite. I don't think I'll be able to get rye bread from any of these.

      Have you asked in those stores? Most of the large organisations do a good range of foods for people with intolerances. Some health food shops also do them but I guess you have a limited resource on the island :sad: .

      Is your problem just a wheat intolerance or is it coeliac? If it's coeliac you will need to avoid gluten and rye contains gluten.

      So really you need to make your own ,lots of recipe sites ,experiment until you find a good one .Buy a bread maker, look out for a second hand one to try it out first,:stirpot:

        I think it's just wheat intolerance Shiney. I did have a trial a while back and cut out wheat and gluten, which made a difference. In the last couple of months I've reduced by bread intake almost to nil and have been eating Ryvita instead with no issues. :)

        I've had a look at these sites Jiffy, thanks. We have a flour mill on the island and I'll see what they have available first.

        It's difficult to find companies that will deliver to the island and if they are willing they usually charge over the top. :)

        I don't think you'll find bread of the puffy, risen type that is 100% rye as rye does not contain as much gluten and doesn't respond so well to the yeast as wheat. So it is generally mixed with wheat flour.

        Your best bet would be pumpernickel types of bread, common in Europe, similar to the Lidl and Aldi black bread which Victoria mentions, also available at a higher price from most delicatessens. I've regularly eaten both Lidl and Aldi's rye bread, preferring Aldi because it comes in a sealed long-life packet so keeps better and stays moister. The flavour and texture is definitely an acquired taste but makes a nice sandwich, IMO. You'd have to check the contents list carefully to see exactly what is in it, though.
