    Hi Kristan,

So it would be better to plant it out rather than keep it in a pot to encourage root growth ? The place i have, the soil is clay based, can get a bit dry in summer (i will water it though and add lots of bulk) so was concerned that it may not do well or die ir the root's are not that strong.
Im just concerned, i know we plant out tree's bare root in winter, so come the spring and for the first summer, the root growths not there and they also do well so am i just panicking ? Shall i just bug it in the border ?

Yes, I would bung it in. You can control the plants around it if they invade :blue thumb:

Flip side is that a plant in the pot gets much colder at the root than one in the ground during the winter. I know Yew is hardy as a hardy thing, but even so the colder roots in a pot will mean it stalls more. More even moisture in the ground too.

If you want to put it somewhere more sheltered, and grow it on, and then plant it out in a couple of years then I would go the pot route. But if you are going to stand the pot where it will be planted eventually, rather than mollycoddling it during the Winter etc., then I suggest you just plant it.

But speak to the nursery about why it isn't rooted into its pot?

Right, here it is, in its final spot.

Does it look ok ? I get terribly OCD about positioning, is it straight, right angle etc ???
he root on it is minimal but i added all the top soil and compost from the pot to the infill. How often do i need to water this now ? Its in a dryish spot ?

It looks very comfortable in it's new home Mr. Grinch. :) Just make sure it doesn't suffer from wind rock over the winter months while it puts it's roots down. Is that a honeysuckle to the right? Keep a check on it, so that it doesn't swamp the Taxus. I'd water it every three to four days when it's dry.

I will keep an eye on it. How would i stop the rock ? How could i tie it in ?

I trim back the honeysuckle every autumn so will keep it in check.

You could try pushing some canes fairly deep into the ground round it which will give it support, but the fence behind it should give it some protection.

Looks champion. You could put a bamboo or somesuch in at 45-degrees, and tie it figure-of-8 to the plant to stop wind rock. Make sure the tie does not choke, or chafe, it over time.
