Its not unusual for lumps of wood of all shapes and sizes to wash up on our local beach. Sometimes they are quite sizeable, but this is quite rare....

For the last few shots, I was actually standing on top of it aiming down because it was too big to show any kind of perspective from ground level.

Looks like a tree root to me.
Still got some bark on it.
I always wonder when I see something like this just how long it has been floating around.

        That's what it is.

I think most of it comes out of the river tees. The prevailing current would take it to the opposite end of the bay, so I guess it comes out of the tees as the tide goes out, and then gets pushed ashore by the incoming tide. That's just a theory though.

Oh, of course, i'm not used to thinking about the currents up your way, most of the stuff down our way comes across from the caribean.

I remember they used to sell "Seaweed Seeds" at Land's End. Big flat bean like seeds.

Now we all know that seaweed doesn't produce seeds. These were really Mangrove Seeds that had floated across the pond.

Your photos seem to have disappeared Clueless, my screen is just showing blank boxes now. I did have a look at them yesterday though, some impressive lumps of driftwood there.
However, if you really like your driftwood on the large side, try this lot for size.
We've just returned from a wonderful holiday driving through western Canada and the Rockies. Some of the beaches there are littered with these huge stumps and tree trunks, presumably washed out to sea from the forests inland along the many fast flowing rivers in the area.

This was on the shore of Howe Sound near West Vancouver.

This was on the shores of Ross Bay in Victoria, Vancouver Island. Incidentally, the pink flowers on the cliffs in the background are a kind of wild pea, very similar to our garden perennial flower, Lathyrus. They looked quite impressive growing en masse in that situation.

This huge stump was just sitting on the beach, simply begging to be photographed!
I took another photo with Mrs. Trunky standing next to it for scale and I'd estimate the whole stump to be about 8ft in height.

              That's impressive Trunky.

I wonder why my pics have disappeared. I seem to be having no end of bad luck with the computer since I started the women drivers thread:help:
