Planning Seed Varieties for Blue and White Border

Starting to assemble a seed list for the Blue and White Border for next year:

Platycodon grandiflora 'Fuji White' - 1 packet (30 seeds) I love these (particularly the buds before the flowers open), I have one plant that is Blue but can't find another source of it

I thought I would have a go at some Delph's, in a nursery bed, and keep the best ones, although these may all "come true" - quite a lot of seed so may have to give some away!

ECHIUM 'SNOW TOWER' I'm growing some bog-standard Blue-ish ones in pots this year, but I'd like to try some in the White border. Probably mad ... but we'll see

I grew some Fan Scarlet for the Red Border this year, which look good, so thought I would try these:

Thats a lot of nice choices Ive bought a snow tower,hope it survives the winter x

 

I'm going to try sowing them this Autumn, overwintering "small" plants, and then they should get a head start next year. They'll provide some interest ... but I'll pot up a few for the following year. (I've read that they don't like being disturbed, so I'm not sure that plant-out, dig-up, bring-in will work for them, hence planning to grow a few "potted")

 

Lovely choices Kristen, especially love the blue lobelia, salvia and veronica, may have to add them to my seed list for next year

I've been giving thought to that bit ... this year didn't go well ("eye's bigger than stomach" syndrome) and consequently some plants raised from seed have suffered and the vegetables are considerable less loved, and fewer plants grown, than usual ...

I lost a some plants at the 9cm-pot stage this Spring. In part that might have been because I used straight multi-purpose, whereas I now think they would have been better with 10% perlite (less soil compaction, and less succumbing to surface-algae-muck - which bottom-watering would also have helped with) - plus I now have capillary matting in the "growing-on" greenhouse, so that would ensure better/more even irrigation in the Spring. I probably need to extend that to have a similar, temporary, irrigation system [e.g. capillary matting] in the conservatory for the Spring-push of plant rearing ... and I keep toying with the idea of a mist-bench which would certainly help enable just-pricked-out things recover the trauma and get under way again. Hmmm ... more toys ... not a difficult decision then?!!

Hi Kristen, just a tip: as far as I remember only the female plants/flowers are showy, the male might be quite ascetic in that respect

 

Thanks ... I'll stick them in a nursery bed until I can sex them!

 

I bought a couple in the Amulree sale ... will keep them potted up / under cover until they get to flowering size ... should have no shortage of seed then!

Commelina. This is C.tuberosa which I grow.................


And C.communis.............


Commelina have very similar growth habits to Tradescantia with flowers of 20/25mm that last for 6 to 8 hours. Tender, but dead easy from seed.

And the pure white form of Tradescantia - hardy as they come..............
