Tomato Growing Competition 2012

I know this is a competition but what do i do now....shouldn't be asking for tips but do i 'pull' him now as 'he's starting to ripen or do i leave him be....-....(fancy asking the competition such a stupid question)Ooops done it again....stupid woman

 

Your tomato has slightly less girth than my one in the 1st pic in post #182 above and which weighed 12 5/8 ozs. In case you thinking your's might be rounder and weigh more, here's a pic of it from the side:



As it get ripe it will lose a small amount of weight, but pick it too soon and it wont be suitable for saving seeds from, but if it's got a blush of colour coming it should continue to ripen and produce viable seeds.

Do you want to eat it? Do you like fried green tomatoes? Do you feel lucky?

Yup, verified by her with the VERY large, sharp teeth in my photo and her mother, brother and two uncles with even larger sharp teeth!

 

Seriously, disappointed this year, it's not been a good year for fruit but I've learned an important lesson, DON'T sow your tomatoes too early, later sown ones have done much better!

I tend to agree. When I first started growing Tomatoes, some 4 years ago, I was keen to get started as early as I could. Once they germinated, I potted them on and kept them in the propagator. Obviously, I quickly ran out of space, and light levels were an issue too. That meant putting them out in the open in my 13' x 10' greenhouse, which I then had to heat But, even with the heater on, I couldn't really maintain a decent temperature, so they suffered. I now tend to sow much later, but I still have to heat at times, but at least they keep growing, with no setbacks. Mind you, I have to resist the urge to sow early
