I do love this time of the year, especially when the weather is dry. The nights are a bit cooler and that smell of autumn is in the air but with the bonus of lovely warm days. My two favourite times are April/May and September. The newness and green of growth in April and May is special and the late warmth and colours in the garden in September are fantastic.
My Asters, Helenium and Rudbeckia look lovely. I do love the daisy type of flower. The insects are loving them also. The Sedum is just coming out and bee's are going mad for it. Ive been digging up and potting on perenial's that havnt worked in a certain area. I'll keep these well watered then plant on in spring. I planted some Daffs yesterday and some tulips, a bit early but ive done it before and had no problems. Ive been trying to level certain area's of the lawn aswell with top soil then re-seeding. Ive had to get the sprinkler out over the last few days as everything his very dry now. Im not complaining though after the summer we have had. My Yew is dropping a few needles, expected i suppose after the lack of root on it but im hoping its just a bit of shock and will settle in. I only hope it makes it through the winter.

        Hiya Mr G.

As you say, it can be a nice time of the year. We had a BBQ this last weekend and it was great to be able to enjoy it with the warmth of the sun. Mind you, the 'nectar' helped;) The strange thing is, I'm not really one that gets THAT much enjoyment from just sitting there and looking at what I've done. To me, it's about the planning and doing. Mind you, the shape of my garden doesn't help. It's 200ft long, but only 15ft wide, so I'm unable to create a 'vista' to sit and admire.

I used to like the more exotic flowers, but now find myself liking the 'simpler' forms, like the daisy type flowers, love Rudbeckia's, Echinacea's and the like:)

Gardening is never ending, and that's part of the fun, I think. I would hate to 'finish' my garden.

        Cheers...Freddy

I know what you mean. I dont really do sitting. When i do, i have to be in the right frame of mind. Usually when its dark with a glass on vino. When i try to do it during the day, i see things that need to be sorted and i cant help myself.

Ive already been planning for next year. I want to change the kids play area from that odd shape to incorporate the shingle area. This will mean taking out the mini wall and re doing it to make the area more rectangle shape. The shingle will be moved and the whole area infilled with bark. I think then it will be more in keeping with the style of the garden. When the kids finally move on, then the area would be big enough to parhapes have a pergola around it and a seat or even my compost area.

            Hiya Mr G

Just took another look at the area you're talking about. Just a thought, how about incorporating a square tunnel/pergola type thingy? Here's what I did. It's nothing special, and I'm not suggesting you do the same, but maybe food for thought? The following pic is as it was partly built. The second pic shows it finished, but from a distance. Hopefully you can see it ok:)

Lovely flowers Mr G :blue thumb:

I think a pergola straddling that path with some climbers over it would look stunning, or some sort of arch :wub2:

Thank you for the photos Mr Grinch. I'm a Rudbeckia fan too. A lovely, late Summer perennial worthy of its place in the border. The pergola idea along that path has taken my fancy too. Climbing rose "Buff Beauty" would love to take up residence.......
