Growing Big Onions from seed

I agree that seed sown are best and also do that. Once I tried seed sown overwintering onions and although I can't remember how they fared, it couldn't have been any good as I didn't bother again. And you can grow milder onions from seeds - a slice from a 2 lb Kelsae is just about right size for adding to a cheese sandwhich.

Now all you need is a 2lb 5 oz sausage to go with that onion...yummy.

Peter, from Newark, collected the prize for the heaviest onion and a new world record with a super specimen weighing in at 18lb 1oz (8.195kg). The previous record of 17lbs 15.5oz was set by Peter at the 2011 Autumn Show.

His winning ways also continued in the giant vegetable competition with a clean sweep of every class. Peter took first place with a massive marrow weighing in at 119lbs 12 oz (54.318kg), a colossal cabbage at 81lbs 6oz(36.912kg), a prodigious potato at 3lb 31/8 oz (1.446kg) and a tremendous tomato weighing 3lb 11/4 oz (1.390kg). In the class for the longest runner bean he won with a specimen measuring 31 3/4" (80.645cms) and also produced the longest cucumber at 32 1/4" (81.915cms).

Bah, he was lucky...

 

Gives us all something to aim for next year - I had an abismal year this year, very little grew and what did got eaten by the slugs before we could protect them!

 

Got 5 1kg+Kelsaes this year, going for bigger and better next year but haven't the 22 years experience and "lighting, heating and cooling" facilities Peter Glazebrook has?

A 2kg one will do me for now, I wish!

Never grown an onion in my life....i'm lying...spring onion...but i'll be up for a challenge next year....(note to self start swatting up on humongus onions)...thought out loud AGAIN

 

Carefull now, it was a Kelsae in a Girt Clay pot that broke my foot last year.
