In 5 years of having juniors, only 1 has showed promise and dedication. All the others ave been worse than useless. The previous but last gave me the best and biggest excuse I've ever heard on why she couldn't come not work. This is the truth, hand on heart!!

After not turning in for work on the 2nd occasion I phoned her up on her mobile asking where she was. Then came the reply!!

" the wind was that strong, that it blew my front door shut and I couldn't get out, and my mum has took the back door key to work after locking it, and your brother told me to stay at home today!!"

I was peeing myself laughing afterwards thinking does she really think that is believable?? She never finished the week out. And what is it with the youth now, thinking its acceptable to text you or send a message on bookface if they're not coming in or are going to be late?. Or thinking that it's ok to make a phonecall/answer a call or text someone whilst being in work and not on a break or lunch?

I was in Human Resources for 23 years in the UK, mostly for major companies, and specialised in Contract Law and unless the laws have changed in the last 11-12 years ... I would politely show him the door ... after all, you did say he was only a student so not an employee?

We had a similar sounding apprentice where I once worked.
He was agressive, annoying and disinterested in actual "work". The senior manager had a requirement to persist with apprentices with the belief they would come good eventually - they had after all met all the educational criteria!
Strangely - after the manager's daughter got pregnant - this particular apprentice seemed to have had the decision made that he needed to move South to take up a "better role".
Does your Boss have any daughters of the right age group Clueless?

In the last 10 years laws have changed. Juniors or apprentices after a short period of time have almost the same employment rights as everyone else. And they know it.

clueless1 said the offending person was a 'student' so I perhaps (wrongly) assumed it was a work experience person. Obviously in this crisis situation of work in this economy (especially where you can get more on the dole rather than working) juniors and apprentices are back in 'vogue' rather than hiring experienced personnel?

... and you do say 'have almost the same employment rights as everyone else' ... but it appears no one has any rights these days ... am I not correct?

PS ... except unless you are not a British Subject or a refugee ... (cough) ... as a UK taxpayer I have a right to say that ...

I was pretty shocked when told about the "reminder texts". In my day we would have had "consequences" i.e. an angry teacher, a clip round the ear from mum and a round of failed A levels. Is this now a decadent society or what?

I guess I've been lucky so far. All my students and juniors have been good, with the possible exception of this latest one but even then, I'm sure he will come good in the end.
