I remember at least 4 (maybe 5 according to gossip) teenagers - 6th formers - having relationships with teachers - back in the early 70s. It was disapproved of and you had to keep it a bit quiet but it wasn't considered an outrageous, evil crime like it is today.

From the point of view of the teenagers, as far as I recall, they were just doing what comes naturally: getting a boyfriend and picking the most charismatic and desirable (as they saw it) one available. Although in several of the cases there might have been an element of an much older man using his position to help him seduce a young girl as far as I can see the girls were very willing and keen to use the experience as a badge of womanhood.

It would be interesting to know if any of those girls - now 60ish- looks back and thinks she was seriously and permanently harmed by the experience. I suspect not.

Whether they are in love or not, they still could have waited until it was legal.
Running away seems like a very immature thing to do.

I met my OH when I was 16 and he was 23. We got engaged, but only got married when we were legally able to. (All be it with written permission from my dad!) We're still married 30 years on, so it's not that I think it would not work out for them. Just they they've gone about it all wrong.
As he's also married he should have had the decency to end that relationship first.

I still think she needs a slapped behind of her mother for being such a selfish brat. Even if she is deeply head over heels in love, and even if she was hell bent on leaving the country with this chap, she could still have taken the time to make peace with her mother first rather than just running off. And the chap, if he had a decent bone in his body, wouldn't have let her go with him until he was sure everything was sorted at home.

Trouble is clueless, I don't see how she could ever have made peace with her mother before doing it - it appears that there was already an investigation and concerns regarding the relationship between the two, and it could well be that they got wind of the investigations and that was the driving force that made them do what they did.

PS - that is obviously based on many, many assumptions, and I haven't really read a lot into the finer details of the story, so stand to be corrected.

Only because for him, being older and supposedly wiser, yet still doing what he did, I have no words.

I wonder where the lass's real Dad is? No comment from him? Today's "family" set ups make it difficult to engender stability I think. Poor things, they cannot be enjoying their time together now as I are regarded as fugitives on the run. Hope they are both OK, France is more liberal than GB and may provide them with shelter and a bit of breathing space.

I hear what you are saying, and whilst she may be 15yrs old now, I wonder how old that she was when all this started. 12,13,14?

Some good comments folks:blue thumb: I think from where WE stand, it's very difficult to fully appreciate exactly what the issues are. IF they are truly in love, then 'nothing' would get in the way. But, that's the point isn't it? Are they truly in love? I knew right from the beginning, that me and Aunt Sally were right for each other, and nothing would get in the way of that. It just so happens that we are only months apart, age wise. But, what if we weren't? Don't get me wrong, these two are making (on the face of it) a huge mistake, and it will all probably end in tears, but as with most things in life, nothing is black and white:)

Freddy you have just reminded me of myself. I fell madly in love at the age of 17 with a girl who was 24. Sadly her family (brothers and dad from a travellers family) threatened pretty much to do me in. Fearing for my life she ended what we had, but I never ever forgot her, and sadly she died about ten years ago.

I agree - I reckon that France has simply been the gateway to the wider world, and wouldn't be surprised if they weren't in Greece, Cyprus, Turkey etc.... (pick a country, any country!)

You are of course, absolutely correct - and therein lies the bit that nobody knows. Is he interested in youngsters 'habitually', or is this a complete and utter one off? Did this all start fairly recently (still not right, but somehow less wrong than if its being going on for a lengthy period)?

Don't get me wrong, as a father myself, I abhor the thought of an adult with a child; indeed, if it were my daughter, I am pretty certain that I would be likely to castrate the blighter personally if I got my hands on him - - however, sitting on the sidelines, detached from the emotion of it all, I still say that there is more to this case than meets the eye, and seriously doubt any malicious or harmful intentions.
