As one of my daughters is so fond of saying 'Christmas is just Sunday with extra veggies and crackers to pull!'

I've been getting increasingly fed up with Christmas to be honest - its almost purely an excuse for people to be parted from their cash, and put on a guilt trip if they don't.

As much as anything else, modern working schedules for many meant that its not even the holiday that it once was, so there isn't even the benefit of a bit of time with the family - I know now that I am working a 14 hour shift on Boxing Day, and I will be on call all day Christmas Day.

And then there is the further guilt trip if you dare to say that you don't enjoy it - its almost like its compulsory to enjoy Christmas!

I love Christmas and the get togethers, the food, the presents and all that, don't get me wrong.
But for me this day has a high religious connotation and I just would feel happy in my heart even if I was to be without money on that day or alone under a bridge... I would feel the same.
All the rest is just a beautiful decoration, but it is not what fills me with joy.

I was just going to post the same thing
Everyone has mentioned presents, money and food, days off, BUT NONE have mentioned the real meaning of CHRISTMAS

Sunday with crackers, What a shame of lost meaning

I absolutely loathe it. Have done for years. I find it so FALSE. I hate being forced to feel the "ho,ho ho" of it all. I get sick of telly adverts.
The only bit I like is the Sally Army band in the High Street and snow.

Not at all - because of distances and work commitments, the very occasional Sunday is one of the rare opportunites we have to be all together and collectively share in the blessings of being part of a close and loving family.

I'm with you 100%, Jenny. Yuk, yuk and YUK!!

Sally Army is to be commended for its efforts to remind people that Christmas actually STARTS with Christ! (yes, I know the date has a pagan background but generally our Christmas is about the birth of Christ)

As for me, I gave up traditional Christmases 4 years ago. Until then I'd done the whole thing, decorations, tree, nativity scene in the front conservatory, the lot. Then in 2008 my knee went bad and had to be replaced and I couldn't do it that year so never have since. (do I hear "ba humbug"! :lolpt: )

I'm not religious at all, so Christmas for me means something entirely different.

The only people I buy presents for are my cousin's two kids. She lives in New Zealand so she tells me what they are into and then I order it online from a shop in NZ. Cousin Babs wraps them for me and I send cards out for her to stick on them.

Apart from that, I buy pressies for the dogs but have even cut down on that because I have a big storage box full of toys which they have hardly played with, so they get one toy each and lots of treats and chews.

I usually treat myself to something nice. This year I'm having one of these bad boys, which I've wanted for years :wub2:

Christmas day will be just like any other here - just me and the dogs and cats. They all get a plate of whatever I'm eating (usually duck). Obviously I'll spend way too much on grub and booze, as per :snork:

I only send half a dozen or so cards each year.

Skipping Christmas this year, decided the commercial Christmas did nothing for me

Can't avoid Christmas and giving of presents totally as Mrs Scungee's sister's birthday is the day after, and her's a couple of days after that, which fits in with my theory that her parents were typically really mean farmer types and they deliberately planned their children's birthdays to minimise expenditure on presents.

And if you think I'm being harsh on my ex-farmer FIL, he complained thoughout our wedding registry office ceremomy about having to pay for car parking in an adjoining street.
