It's our turn to do the dinner this year. If my grandparents have not already got plans and come to us that makes 20 for dinner with another 5 coming for tea. I love the family get together on Christmas day it's probably the only time that all my family and wife's family come together and it lasts until the early hours of Boxing day. It really is a great day in our family. I cannot believe how fast this year has gone though.

We'll be doing what we have done for the past five years - going on a cruise! We don't have any family and we started to go away when it got embarrassing turning down invitations to join other people's celebrations "because there was just two of us". This means I don't have to do any shopping, can have turkey just once on Christmas day and there is someone else to make the bed!!

Whatever your plans, have a lovely peaceful time

No problem for us. We don't do presents (never have done) - except for kids. That's birthdays and anniversaries as well. There are no young kids in our family (but there is likely to be a number of fourth generation soon) but there are a few kids of my ex-staff that will get presents (being a, sort of, godfather to many of them).

We used to send Christmas cards but gave up about 15 years ago when we were sending about 200 each year and received about 300 :hate-shocked: (our Christmas decorations were the cards hung all round the room :)) . We now give the money we would have spent on cards to charity and asked everyone to stop sending to us. Although we do send cards to people that we don't see much - or at all.

Prudence, enjoy your cruise :dbgrtmb:. Is it on one of the lines that don't go over the top with their Christmas celebrations? Some of them can overdo it.

That puts me in the mind of the old paraffin stove we used when I was a little bitty kid!

You haven't tried that bottle of Esso Blue Wine I sent you yet then:snork:

Carbon Monoxide poisoning, fortunately I came round as my head went under the bath water & managed to drag myself out of the bath. Was throwing up all evening.

I like Christmas. I don't go in for the religious aspect of it (christian, pagan or otherwise) other than in the sense that it brings the extended family together for at least one day of the year (if religion can't come up with a tradition that brings families together once per year, then what hope has it got of achieving anything?).

I like to do the cooking now we've moved back home. Last year for the first christmas in nearly 20 years my dad and I were peeling veg together while the womenfolk nattered or whatever they do in the living room and the lad played with all the new stuff Santa had brought him.

Events like christmas are important. They push us to make an effort to keep in touch with everyone when apathy would make us not bother. Its also a free day off work.
