What Jobs Are We Doing in the Garden Today... MK2..

Had to gather the last fruits of the Maskotka toms today. Then,the ragged plants were removed from the window boxes and ceremoniously placed in an empty compost bag . Will go off to the tip on Monday. I shall really miss them and I said my thankyous and goodbyes,
Boxes now filled with nice new compost and crammed full of last year's mini daffodils and squill and topped with some violet and white pansies with huge faces.
Thus, the season moves on....

 

The plan for today was to plant up the area under the sitting room window - the soil was too hard before, but with the recent rain, it is perfect. Then, I remembered: men-who-can are coming to repair the window surround in a week's time and any planting I do will be scuppered by their size 9s; so, that plan has been put on hold until the job is done.

This morning, when I was having a coffee with my ducks, I heard a bit of a commotion on the fence ... there was Mr Squirrel clambering amongst my sunflowers and ripping one to pieces (I do not mind, I have a glut of them). I managed to get really quite close to him and was kicking myself I hadn't got my camera in my pocket
This afternoon, it was a case of pulling out all the sunflower stalks which were now headless (although, admittedly, some I had cropped for my chooks). Some of those stalks were like small trees - and quite, quite heavy! The compost heap is very grateful for it's latest "feed".

 

Bet your chooks went berzek over those sunflower seeds Mum

 

Oh they did, loli!!! So did the ducks (although their bills are not quite so adapted to getting those tightly packed seeds out as a chook beak).

I've still go some sunflowers left for giving the girls a treat. Now, I'm wondering .... are sunflower seeds packed with omega 3? And, if they are ... will my eggs now be "Omega 3 fortified"?

 

Yay Mum . Reckon you've hit on a megabucks marketing ploy there. Off you go then - time to talk to Mr Sainsbury .

 

More like Mr J (neighbour) who runs a veg delivery scheme + is a sleeping partner in a local restaurant

 

I spent a couple of hours continuing the dig of my new bed, my back was complaining so I stopped for today and did some watering of pots and tidying up.

 

I intend to remove everything from the front borders
Twelve roses, ten heucheras, four Lavendula, and thirty crocosima, plus around sixty bulbs sieved to find them
Then I intend to find the gas main that runs beneath, clear the soil, add twelve bags of HM, and replant, avoiding the gas mains for the standard roses and posts

Well that is the intention

Jack the gas pipe reminds me when I lived in a house and I was digging down the side of the drive to plant a hedge , and hit this bright yellow plastic pipe thingy ??

I tried to pull it up with the spade then the fork , hit it with the spade several times

until next door came out and told me it was the gas pipe for my house !!! and what the hell was I doing and I could of blown up them as well as me !!!!

No worries Spruce..i've done similar myself...wacking the heck out of armoured cable before i knew what it was

 

Pruning, weeding, lifting a few tender and borderline hardy plants. Net result- my back went!
