Dunno about Internet sites :( but I have been very pleased with the Roses we got (bare root) from Cants near Colchester. Come to think of it, although we did go to their Field to choose the varieties we wanted, we actually ordered mail-order ...

.... tuns out you can order online, although the mechanics of the site is a bit lo-brow!

I've bought all my bare root roses from Style Roses, Sheal, after they were recommended by .....[I forget who!!] last year. The roses have been excellent, well packaged and a reasonable price....although not £1.99P as I would like.:heehee:

Thanks Kristen, ironically I lived in Colchester before I moved to the island. They will deliver here unlike many sites, but they want an extra tenner for the pleasure!

I've bought a couple from the Garden Centre Group (not bare root) and they were pretty good :)

Just being nosey, what varieties are you buying?

Thank you everyone, I'll check the sites out. :dbgrtmb: I want to buy six to eight roses to start my bed off which I'm still in the process of digging out (rain go away), I hope to have it finished manured and composted in the next fortnight, once again weather permitting. Once I have the first plants in I will then decide how to develop the rest of the bed planting wise.

My idea at the moment is to start looking at what is available ready for ordering, I prefer the more traditional roses and thanks to Armandii the first one on my list is 'Kings Ransom'. :)

I haven't had roses for over twenty years, since I moved to the island in fact. So I'm looking forward to seeing them in bloom next summer.

A question to all please...........how do you feel about different coloured roses in the same bed? I'm wondering whether they will look gawdy all together and perhaps I should stick with colours that complement each other.

Well, you've seen my garden, Sheal, I don't pay any attention to colour co-ordination or anything like that.:snork: I think you've got a good idea of what you want in the back of your mind and, after all, the rose bed is for you so really I'd go for you want whether it's mix of colours or something more conventional or co-ordinated.:coffee:

My Mother's sister gave my mother something like 70 roses for a birthday present when I was a kid. We had a series of formal beds that weren't doing very much, and once planted up they made an ideal formal rose garden. Looked lovely but, personally, I never liked the fact that all the roses were different - too much of a "plantsman's collection" rather than a "statement".

I've planted two rose borders in my time ... both similar. First was along the foot of a raised terrace and I planted Anna Ford in the front and Iceberg at the back. Here I have roses along my (flat) terrace and I have Just Joey at the front and Chandos Beauty at the back; they were chosen for their colour, but also on the basis of having powerful scent :)

Sorry: only photo I could find, taken in early June before the ones at the back were out

Mmmm, I guess I must be a "Plantsman" then, Kristen:dunno: :heehee: For me, a garden is for enjoying the growing of plants that I like, the bringing in of wildlife, the scent of shrubs, and all other plants.
I honestly don't see the point of making a "statement", be it plants or ornaments, because the "statement" can sometimes be about the person rather than the garden. although I do agree formal gardens are usually full of "statement";) I hope my garden says "I'm a garden, enjoy me!".
But every gardener's garden and style is different [thank goodness] and what makes us all alike is when we got a garden tool in our hands or looking out onto the garden with a smile on our face:snork:

Good morning all .Kristen lovely Rose border my friend,IMHO the colours and theme are a personal thing with roses such as paint colours when you are decorating a room;) having spent many years caring for large rose beds (200 in a bed)with just one/two variety's in each bed colour co-ordination was a must, but if we are talking about roses spread all around the garden or in a small border or bed, then the rainbow effect is fine, as our choice,s are limited in the numbers/colours we can grow, this is just my personal opinion,I say go for it Sheal your the one that will see and enjoy them every day:)

This is a favorite on mine;)

                      :)

I like a garden which makes me say "Wow" ... something to look at in the broader sense, rather a garden where people are wandering around looking at specific plants and saying "That looks nice, I wonder what variety it is" and trying to find a plant label, rather than enjoying the overall effect. To my mind that's the difference between, what I would call, "A collection of plants" and "A garden".

Nothing wrong with a collection of plants, of course, different objective though - even in trying to create something with broad appeal I hanker after particular/rare/"plantsman's" :) plants of course :)

In the pursuit of my aim I strive to find "combination plantings" that look good together (like Mrs Kristen and myself, of course!!)

                      Indeed :)
