John I can see you are over the moon with that, good luck. I'm being negative I know, but that trachy should actually have much more foliage than that, and probably much more root. If that was grown normally it would have foliage right to the ground at that height, I'm not sure what they do with them to get them looking like that. I'm thinking it might sulk for a few years.
Yes I was going to go and pick it up but the postage was cheaper than the petrol money and I would only buy more stuff if I went there in person
I think they have chopped off a lot of the foliage to ship it pete. Suits me because I am thinking about stripping off the fibre to expose the trunk, I've seen it done at a couple of nurseries. I will wait till the spring just to give it a chance to overwinter with it's furry coat. You could be right about the root size though. When I get it out of the pot I'll have a better idea the root ball size. I'm still over the moon though
I agree, but I also think it will look fine at the back of the border where John has it ... and then he can get a nice, smaller, fat one for the front of the border

I can see a flaw in that plan Kristen, If John does that, the one in front is very likely to overtake the one at the back after a few years.
The 'Waggie' has smaller more upright stiffer leaves and is less susceptible to wind damage than the T. fortunei (which can look a bit ragged in an exposed position). Otherwise it is practically the same as T. fortunei in terms of growth and hardiness.
