OK, so I don't have a Telly Box, but I do have a laptop.

As far as I can make out, I only need a licence if I want to watch live TV.

So if I stop paying the direct debit, will it be like the time I had a black & white tv, with a black & white licence when they kicked the door in & threatened to fine me £400 for having a video recorder, which they claimed I could record colour programes on & then play them back on a colour tv (which I didn't have)?

After buying a colour licence, I later found that the videos I had made only played back in black and white:doh:

You give them the finger Ziggy and tell them where to go

You don't need a TV license even if you own a TV :) now if you had it linked to an aerial then they might have something to say about it:snork:

There's a few things you should know about TV Licensing.

      1. TV Detector vans = Totally fake. They were built to scare people into confessing:)

      2. The Big Database, yes it links to the Post-office Address File and therefore has (almost) every address on it, cross reference that to the TV License database and you get all unlicensed addresses, including those where nobody lives and/or where there is no TV. More propaganda.

      3. The contract is (as far as I'm aware) still held by the private company, Capita. To say that they are a bit bureaucratic would be an understatement. They actually summonsed my mate's deceased father to court nearly a year after the chap had died, and despite being told numerous times that the house was empty. In the end my mate phoned them and told them to just go ahead and sue the man. As far as I know the court hearing was booked and everything. Presumably they held a seance to tell the old boy that he had to pay a few grand in fines. I once had to threaten legal action for harassment after they tried repeatedly to make me buy a license for me and the wife while we were temporarily living at my mam's. They said 'it could be flats', so I told them to have a look at their sophisticated database they always brag about that claims to know everything about every household, then they'd see it was a private dwelling house, and that it was already licensed, and if I receive one more letter I'll be using that along with all the previous correspondence as evidence in court of their harassment.

Taken from TV Licensing website :-

People need a TV Licence to watch or record TV programmes as they are broadcast, no matter what equipment they are using or how they receive the programmes. This means that if a person is watching TV live on a computer or a mobile phone, they must be covered by a licence.

          Thanks for the input:dbgrtmb:

So if I don't watch live TV or any other forms of cross dressers, how will they try to fit me up this time?

            From the licencing board
If you use the BBC iPlayer to watch BBC programmes after they have been broadcast either to download or via streaming on demand then you will not need a TV Licence

Seems a lot of law has changed, you used to get fined for owning equipment that COULD receive a broadcast ie NO TV but owned a VCR or PC

That is why I checked their site, as I was always under the impression it was a case of 'equipment able to receive a broadcast'.

Hi Zigs, we got rid of our television nearly two years ago. We understood that we could watch television on computer as long as the programmes weren't live.

A few weeks after cancelling our licence we had a phone call, they wanted to know why we had cancelled and if we had any televisions in our house. They then said they would be sending somebody to our home at some point to check for themselves. My husband who took the call, said feel free, but I don't think anyone is going to pay the high fare to get to the island just to check what we have or don't have. Not heard a thing since. :)

Four or five years back, the licencing people started sending a couple of detector vans to the island until a householder found a loophole. You have to have a work permit when you first come to the island, at that point for the first five years and bearing in mind also that businesses here have to employ the people of the island first wherever possible which is strongly vetted. After this was pointed out to our government, the vans and there occupants were kicked off the island and as far as I know haven't been back since.

I must point out a major error in the article. Where it says:

                          It really ought to say:
