You don't have to buy David Austin direct from them. I've bought some containerised roses from other sources, which were a lot cheaper than buying them direct from David Austin :blue thumb:

Think their bare root prices are more reasonable, but not compared them with anywhere else.

To be honest, while I bow to the great marketing success that David Austin has built up, I don't really see what the desire is to buy from them. There are hundreds of specialist rose growers who sell really excellent roses, in huge ranges, and a lot cheaper than David Austin. Also I've, personally, have never seen any Garden Centres selling David Austin roses cheaper than them, in fact just the opposite!!:snork:
I buy from either local growers or, the last 5, from on-line after a recommendation from a GC member. Is buying from David Austin's a kind of "Statement", or like a buying a tin of beans...i.e. the marketing has been so good that a majority of people automatically reach for Heinz?:heehee:

I agree with you Armandii, once again shouldn't we be supporting the smaller growers/suppliers. I have no intentions of paying over the top for a brand name............Tesco's beans I fine with me!

I know it's trivial Armandii, but I love to browse D.A's Rose catalogue. Superb photography and extensive info. on the attributes of each rose. I'm sure the "free" catalogue cost is included in the sale price of their Roses,

I didn't know DA from Adam when I first became a fan of his roses :dunno: I buy them because I love the roses. I love the shapes, scents, colours, etc :wub2: I've had a good look around at others and can't find anything I like nearly as much elsewhere.

I bought a couple of DA roses from the Garden Centre Group (you can buy online or arrange for it to be sent to one of their centres for collection) for £16.99 each, when the price for containerised roses on the DA site was £26 plus £10 delivery.

The others I bought from Bents garden centre which were on offer at £30 for two, so even cheaper :blue thumb:

Your best DA price, of around £16 each, is still twice what my local Rose-specialist nursery charges ...

However, if there is a particular variety that you want then you have to buy that wherever it is available, which might indeed be DA - I would certainly do that for anything I particularly wanted :).

I don't think that most roses are specific to a single supplier though, but others may prove me wrong on that?

Oh, it's each to their own, Jenny, and browsing through catalogues of plants is something nearly every Gardener enjoys and it keeps us going until Spring giving us new ideas and ambitions.
I hope Merlworld will forgive me :wub2: but her comments seem to show how successful Dave Austin marketing campaign has been because she seems to be inferring that she loves the shapes, scents and colours of the roses because they're David Austin roses.:dunno: But if you were to take the labels off and mix up the roses with other lesser known, but equally skilful and knowledgeable commercial rose growers you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
But like I say when you think of Roses you think within seconds of David Austin, when you think of David Austin you automatically think of shapes, scents, and colours of Walt Disney proportions and, of course, quality...........and that's what's imprinted on even a person's mind who never bought a rose from David Austin or visited them.......so that's how powerful and influential their marketing has been.:coffee:

Very well put Armandii. And its a very good reason to buy, and to continue buying, David Austin roses.

However, I would just as prefer that people buy twice as many Roses, at half the price each, from an equally reputable source, if they would be so inclined. Twice as much pleasure that way :blue thumb:

I agree, Kristen, and I've bought named roses from a local reputable Plant Nursery who has a stall on the Nantwich Market and was selling stock that hadn't "moved" at the price asked at the Nursery.....and I got them for £3 a piece, lovely roses, lovely price!!:snork:

I thought other sellers of David Austin roses were under a commercial agreement to sell the roses at either the same price or higher???........obviously wrong:heehee:

Au contraire mon ami, that's the opposite of what I meant to convey :)

I did spend time going round garden centres (one of which had a quite extensive selection of roses and was where I bought my first DA roses) and even visited a nearby rose nursery, but kept coming back to the DA roses because in my (admittedly limited) experience they are perfect for my tastes.

Fully agree that some people will buy DA roses because of their marketing, but as those who know me best will attest, on principle I don't buy 'brand names' if something cheaper will do just as well, so if I could have found roses at half the price which were just as nice (to me), then I would ;)

My apologies to you, Merleworld, my friend, for misinterpreting your comments about buying roses:mute::snork: I deliberately left myself some "wriggle room" by saying your comments "seemed" to say that you were influenced by David Austin marketing.:heehee:
But my point about the imprint in peoples minds regarding Roses and David Austin does remain valid I think:coffee:
