Found some interesting info out about the woods next to my yard ....

    It seems that the woodland next to my yard (my dad owns 3 acres, and my yard is based there) is classed as ancient woodland and is supposedly over 1000 years old :yikes: .

    Having done a bit more reading (quite a lot of time on Sunday :) ), it seems that there have been all kinds that have been through and around the woods, Romans, Anglo Saxons etc etc and have been known to be visited by smugglers and thieves as well all that time ago.

    After mentioning this to the other half, she was of the same opinion as me, that the woods could be worth investigating for artifacts of some kind.

    The specific wood directly next to my dads is Tile wood (is shares the boundary with my dads place), and starvelarks wood is attached to Tile wood.

    There are 3 lots of woods Pound Wood (which is largest), Tile and Starvelarks. There is a lot of info surrounding Pound Wood, found here :-

        Oh ..... And guess why I started looking into the woodland ?

        That guy I did the job for started telling me about the woodland, and how the woodland had been used in the past (which interested me), and that is why I started researching a little further.

          My metal detector was about £30 from maplin electronics.

          Its strange, but the Webmaster on Another forum got into metal detecting & I talked him thru all the techniques, must be something to do with owning a website:snork:

            Yes, I have been looking into getting a detector. In fact, t'other half said I should get one as well :)

                You can test if it is an ancient woodland by looking at old maps. In England I think any wood on a map before 1600 or 1650 is ancient as it is unlikely to be planted. There is an ancient woodland near my house (not mine alas) that is full of moss and lichen and plants that you rarely see. Nice to hear Owls at night from it.

                  If I was nearer, i'd come round and do a survey/report on it.

                  Did one for English Heritage on Clarendon Palace, right smack in the middle of Salisbury Plain.

                  I was expecting to find chalk grassland plants, but what I found was mainly woodland species. Turned out that when the Palace was abandoned in the 13th Century, it reverted to woodland while all around it the plain was cleared for agriculture.

                    If you'll excuse the pun Nathan, I didn't know you came from that neck of the woods, I know it quite well, I was reared in Great Tarpots.

                    A very interesting read, thank you. :) The write-up says the origination of the name Pound Wood has not been found. I'm wondering if there is any connection between that and Pound Lane at Bowers Gifford and if that has ever been looked into. :scratch:

                      The Pound, was generally a small walled enclosure with a lockable gate. Any animal found wandering (don't forget most hedges weren't planted till the 17th /18th C Enclosures) was taken to The Pound and locked in. Its owner had to pay a fine to get it back. Most parishes had a pound
