2013 Onion Growing Challenge

Thanks Lol, I still have some from this year, and have just got some more....both red and white. I'm growing a lot next year as we do use a lot of onions.

I'm also thinking I might try one of the varieties Scrungee mentions too, it wont hurt to try half a dozen to grow alongside the MI's...useful comparison.

In my humble opinion AND I'm out to prove myself wrong because I too will try Ailsaes next year, Ailsaes are a cross between Ailsae Craig and Kelsaes?

We know Ailsae's dont grow as big as Kelsaes, so why should any offspring off the crossing be bigger? Just a thought!

Onions grown from seed are the way to go, for large Onions. I just thought that for those that don't want to go to the trouble of growing from seed, then there could be a category of biggest Onion grown from a set

 

If the offer is open to Potty's then yes please, I have some Beringer (sp) and a few Bed Champ seeds, I dont want to seem greedy but I have about 12 10" square pots that I'd like to try growing bigger ones in, so just enough seed to cover the pots, whatever you think they germinate like?

Kelsae module grown seedlings will be available from D T Brown in the spring, should anyone wish to go that route.....

Also, some may be available from "Yazzlemer Kennels" (that's me!)

It will be so interesting to see how my new bed does!

 

Genetics is an odd thing, logic would suggest that, but the hybrid could have unexpected results.

Just a point of clarification, so that there's no confusion. The competition is for the heaviest Onion, grown from seed, and grown from a set. Are we all happy with that?

Yes, good idea - 2 classes to go for!

As 'Showmaster' sets are no longer available I've searched without success for something with potential to grow big, nor can I find any information as to whether it's advantageous to start sets off early (except autumn planting in a polytunnel) or under lights in pots (somewhere coolish to avoid bolting?) to get bigger bulbs from an extended growing season.

Are you going to add some basic rules plus weighoff date to post #1?
