We have just ordered some stuff from Wickes. Good prices etc and free delivery. So far ok, BUT a mandatory requirement on the order is a Mobile phone number. Well, number one we don't have a mobile phone and number 2 they don't work here as there is no signal. All our visitors who have Mobile phones have to go wandering the road to find a spot where they can connect.
So, Wickes are going to try to ring the Mobile number we gave them( borrowed one for a couple of days) and then what happens when they cannot connect?
Can you think of anything more stupid?

Yes, Wickes 2012 recipe 'multi-purpose' compost.

But getting more serious, there's too many people who want your email + mobile phone number these days before they'll deal with you.

I tried to order something from Viking Direct a few days ago, and because I've previously ordered from them years ago they wouldn't let me create a new account unless I regurgitated my account number, plus a whole load of other stuff that I never bothered to write down/save.

    Well, you could try saying

"No problem! I'll place my order with someone else." See if it helps.

I suspect the main reason they want your email address is to send you marketing stuff. At least having a mobile number might have a practical purpose.

I thought that when I reported a wildlife crime to the RSPCA, giving them both my landline and mobile numbers. After a while we were inundated with silent calls (from abroad so not covered by Telephone Preference Service) on our landline by a number known for RSPCA cold calling fundraising plus I'm still getting the same on my mobile and can't stop it.

Think very carefully about giving anyone your mobile number. Argos, Wilkos, Tesco Direct are fine, but who'd of thought that the RSPCA would plague you with nuisance calls?

Wickes 'red pencil prices' are ... errm ... odd. They've deliberately chosen to include items with curious 'normal' selling prices then added those immortal words '... now only ...' - on a recent trip a quick calculation and on the item I wanted I was saving a whole (pause for drumroll) 14p.

As for giving a mobile number, well I'm happy to do just that - I don't have caller display on my landline so, when these people want to bombard me with rubbish I can just look at the number on my mobile and if I don't recognise it, I can happily ignore it.

No problem at all to ignore the Mobile, there is no signal here. The problem is that our postcode starts a long way from us. We often get calls from Delivery drivers saying "The Sat Nav says we are at your property, but there are no houses here."
Our house is another mile from the beginning of the post-code.
I can see the Wickes lorry sitting down the road with a perplexed driver. Wonder if they are too stupid too use the landline number which they also have.

They're stupid to insist on a mobile number.

I just make one up :heehee:

The only time I had a problem was with my bank. I've had internet banking with them for years. They then decided to make it even more secure by sending a text with a one time code whenever I wanted to make a transaction. I spoke to them and told them I don't have a mobile and they said I now needed one. Othwerwise the only way I could make transactions was by phone or going into a branch. So, my 'internet account' could only be operated by mobile phone, telephone or in person  :hate-shocked:. By the time I got through creating problems for them and then spoke to the head of marketing they decided that they could overide the computer system and allow me to operate my 'internet account' by internet! :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

The main problem with giving out mobile numbers is they tend to call when you're driving.
Assuming you legally pull over to answer it you would feel less than happy if it was a cold call.
I got one 2 weeks ago from my Bank (HSBC - the one that closed my local branch and moved my accounts to a town centre branch I can't get to when they are open). I said I was driving and wasn't in a position to talk about an issue affecting my account at that time.
As yet I have had no further contact & the account seems OK to me.

Whenever I order anything online, my phone numbers are:

        Landline: 01234567890
        Mobile: 07234567890

Strangely we don't get very many cold calls:scratch:

        Sorry Clueless.
Inadvertantly I seem to have used your Landline number a few times.
        I do apologise!

An update. The delivery man was from a local (ish) firm who had delivered to us before so he knew where we are. He still tried to ring on the mobile number though. No good anyone using it now, it is a pay as you go one and the card ran out so the number is now defunct.
