Received the HUGE seed parcel this morning. Plenty of brand-name packets, with pictures and instructions, but also some self-collected seeds many of which I don't know, so in case you will be receiving the seed parcel and don't know them either here's some pictures of the ones I had to look up :) picture chosen at random from Google

I should have wrote on the packet that the daylilies won't come true from seed, some often look very like one of the parents but others can look completely different, fun finding out though , no idea what they've crossed with the bees did the work :), best way to germinate them is in the fridge, just put them in a zip lock bag with some slightly damp vermiculite (not too wet or the seeds will rot), they take 6-8 weeks to germinate, sometimes longer so don't give up, when the white roots a couple of inches long put the bag on a bright windowsill and in a matter of days a green shoot will appear when that gets 3-4inches tall pot up, this method has over 95% success with usually every seed germinating.

[IMG]Oh *sigh*. Me next but I haven't got anything exciting to put in.
Only this one, not exciting but I love it anyway. Hesperis matronalis, or dame's violet. Biennial, self seeds so just gets on with it once established, spring purple colour (or maybe white) and nicely scented.

Madahhlia ,its to my mind not all about exciting or different seeds ,they can need special conditions which we all cannot provide.:gaah:
It`s nice to try them but if you know in your head you can`t do it  ,it`s disheartening watching them die :cry3:

We all buy seeds with 2000 per packet .I personally don`t have a big enough garden for more than a small clump of any one thing.:rolleyespink:

There is space in most gardens for your bog standard annuals, which we all grow a few of as space fillers ,:spinning:

Yes I would like to try the "exciting" and "different" , but as some seed costs can be prohibitive to us ,its exciting to find in the parcel something you always liked but never bought.:wow:

So all seeds are welcome, and we all will take pleasure next year, with the thought I had that from the parcel and its giving me joy..:yahoo:

If they'd been in the packet when it came to me I'd have had a few Madahhlia :), something I've always meant to grow but forget every year, they put on such a lovely show and that scent :wub2:
Do we have a thread were members can give tips on germinating difficult seeds?
