    Right, I'm back - sorry, I was soooo hungry.

    She is an A4 Avant, 2.0TDI SE; full black leather interior, 6CD changer with Aux in and phone prep/bluetooth, automatic headlights, and triple zone climate control; the stereo is incredibly good (what I have heard of it so far), and the car itself is so quiet and so smooth, its like another world.

      Bluetooth is good if you need to talk whilst driving isn't it? In the good old days, you could go off for a trip round just to hear a new CD you had bought. Always sounded better in the confined area of a car. Sadly, that's a luxury we cannot really afford anymore FC with the cost of fuel. Is it manual or Automatic? How many gears?
      Are you going to let your dearly beloved drive it? That's the test of real love....
      Bet you can't wait to drive off to work in the morning :dancy:

      Yeah, bluetooth is for the phone - handy, but not something I will use daily.

      Its a six speed manual, and the onboard computer appears to have more intelligence than I do! Amongst other things, it controls:

      - Speed warning (tells you off if you go over a preset speed)
      - Coming home lights
      - Leaving lights
      - Automatic anti-car jacking central locking
      - How sensitive you want the automatic headlights to be
      - Which doors open when you unlock, and with how many clicks of the key button
      - What the oil level is

      And that is just the bits I have worked out so far!

      I would let Mrs C drive it, but she doesn't drive, so she will have to remain contended to be chauffeured around (its a hard life!)

      I am sort of looking forward to driving off to work, and sort of not - I am looking forward to a day off so I can spend an hour or three getting really familiar with the computer bits.

      Still, although its costing me a few quid a month more a month, I feel that I have dodged a bullet with my other one - I reckon it was only a matter of time before something went wrong and I was landed with a big bill (in fact, there was an £800 bill sitting in the wings already)

        I think you did the right thing too FC.
        Gosh, you are SO BLOKEY. You are all the same, like kiddies with a toybox full of new toys. Can't wait to try everything. I just get in and adjust all the mirrors and the seat rake ( he's 9" taller ) and change to Classic FM and press the starter button.
        Did you know, if you hold the "window open" button down when approaching the car, it will open all the windows so that the initial oven heat dissipates before you get in? My OH mentioned this to his best friend who turned round and said "I've known you for 48 years and that's the most useful thing you've ever told me!".

          It took me six months of ownership with my last car to figure that I could do that with it.

          I must admit, I am like a kid in a sweet shop at the moment - I've just read through the manual, and it is incredible the amount of features that it has, most of which are automatic and can have various settings made for each individual key!

          More than anything though, it brought us home very comfortably, very quietly and gave us around 50 mpg in the process - not bad for a fairly big car. And everything feels as solid as rock, and it feels as safe as houses (funny how these things matter more the older you get?)

          FC i dont know if it's of any comfort, or assistance, but i know locally i can pick up around a 2003 jaguar s type for around 3k. basically because it's the same as a ford fiesta with a different body! I live down on the south coast, so we are quite an expensive region to buy cars in too. I recommend looking locally less of the big car "hyper markets" as prices are inflated due to massive overheads, but mkae friends with the local mechanic, (or even your depot mechanic, if i remember your career correctly?) and take them with you thoroughly test drive the car, find out every last detail as much as you can do!

                BHP isn't much of a measure of how much fun it will be to drive in normal circumstances I think. Remember, a diesel engine has much greater torque than its petrol counterpart, but because diesels don't rev as high, they don't generally achieve as much bhp.

                So, if you're want to howl the engine and blow it up after 1000 miles, then the bhp figure is the one you're interested in. If you're more interested in how well it pulls from a standing start without the engine noticeably struggling, torque is the more interesting figure. In any case, 143bhp is ample in a diesel.
