We are all well aware that yes the police do have an extremley difficult job to do...but i was read the riot act because i'd rang 999...which was "only in case of emergencies"...but as i pointed out quite clearly that someone who was opening my back door to come a walking on in(i couldn't actually see them as we only had lamps on at the time causing a reflection and being mostly glass back way..saw know one but there was someone there,a door handle don't move on it's own)....and after they were rumbled they ran for it....after a lot of chasing and screaching..we checked out the garden to find 3 cans full of petrol in the garden....now i'm sorry but to me that's an emergency...When they turned up i bet they wished they hadn't....i was like a raving looney...because i was scared...i went through them like a dose of salts....i couldn't be doing with their silly excuses...:gaah:.....it eventually turns out 'whoever' had robbed a couple of garages nearby and took off on a moped....hey and to top it all the 4 coppers were arguing amongst themselves because they didn't know what to do with the petrol cans because they couldn't take it back with them because mr whoever in the stores would do his nut if they turned up with it ...health and safety and all that.....so as you may be aware i have lost alot of faith in them....
I must make it clear that i have been as polite as possible with this post...not done too bad i think because if i'd have said what i really wanted to i'd have been banned....

No, I'm not so sure either. Just trying to see what it's like to do a very difficult job.

Several problems i can think of:

a.Police culture. No matter what they say, there's a lot of sexism/racism/whateverism and internal invisible rules to be obeyed that outsiders are pretty much unaware of. They keep trying to change it but the police force is a law unto itself that will be very slow to change from within and resistant to change from without.

b.Recruit quality. As someone has already touched on, recruits are generally by no means the brightest, and there's no way I can think of of giving people maturity or integrity tests before joining. They could probably manage eyesight tests, though.

Just reading this thread is bringing home to me the damage this incident will have done to the Cred of the force. As much as I reluctantly agree (although uncomfortable with it) with what you say, ours is still squeaky clean compared with many others and is the envy of much of the world,

If he'd died, there would of course be an investigation into his death. As part of that investigation, questions would be asked like:

            * Was the copper that fired it authorised to do so?
            * Did he issue any kind of warning beforehand?
            * Was the taser authorised for use?

The answer to all 3 would be yes, so 'lessons would be learned' and that would be that. Except of course for the chap's family.

But the problem is, Jenny, that there is a creeping policy of Police Officers being willing to to use force or deadly force before establishing that the person in their sights is a danger, is actually holding a weapon......now that smacks of the way things operate on the other side of the Pond. If the Police can't, or don't want to, distinguish between a blind man's White Stick and a Japanese Sword, or a man holding a chair leg which they identify as a Shotgun and use force or deadly force then they are an organisation that isn't serving or protecting the Public any more, which is what their original purpose was supposed to be.:coffee:

Still awaiting the comments from the Force Armandii. Law and Order in this country is getting harder and harder to maintain/manage. Starts with poor parenting, then schools' restrictions ( non PC) then emergent adulthood and then
              - too late to shut Pandora's box.....

Would that be poor parenting where the parents daren't enforce any rules because if you smack a naughty child, they can be done for assault, and even if you ground them or take their gadgets off them then you are breaching their human rights?

Or the poor parenting where you negligently allow your kids to go into a school for several hours a day knowing full well that your kid will have to fit in with whatever the other kids decide is the norm, just to get by, and the staff in the school will be doing nothing to steer and guide them because they too are terrified of losing their jobs, their entire careers, and possibly even their freedom if they step into a situation between kids?

'Society' has taken almost all parental powers away, and then when their kid steps out of line and stands there in front of their parent and says bold as brass "if you hit me, I'll have you in court" and the parent knows the kid is right, and that parent knows that if they do break the law and dispense discipline, then there is a chance the kid will be dragged into the state care system where they have no chance of normality, so the parent does nothing, people will look at that unruly kid and say it all starts with poor parenting.

If a blind man is quietly going about his business and hears the words "Police stop" (or whatever the words were) he's unlikely to look around and see if they are referring to him. So he can hardly be blamed for not stopping. I was able to spot a blind man approaching a zebra crossing on Monday whilst driving in heavy town centre traffic (the white stick was a give-away in this case) and I wasn't even in a state of heightened perception that someone bearing a potentially lethal weapon SHOULD be in. Gross incompetence would be a polite way of describing this incident.

                    My thoughts.

I think for the most part the Police do a very good job. Thing is, as with all parts of society, there are some thugs within. I have no doubt that there are some that relish the opportunity to dish out a bit of 'force'. I'm not saying that in this particular case the police officer is a thug, but one has to wonder....

I am quite happy with Fife Police force and Police in general

But JUST WHAT was the officer who tassered a blind man lying on the floor shouting
                        "I am Blind"
                        thinking about it beggars belief
The only outlandish scenerio I can think of is

They had a report of a gunman (they didn't)
                        It was dark
There was a figure lying prone with possibly something like a rifle pointing at him
If he thought it was a sword then no excuse at all

                        It really is unbelievable
