2013 Onion Growing Challenge

I've been going to prep my onion bed for 2wks now and still haven't done it...so this weekend it is... mine will only be a little one as i haven't got the space 1 1/2 metres square (approx)....but still big enough for a MASSIVE onion

I'm happy with the guidelines and I will be trying a few varieties. Apart from the onions for the table I will have a bed 12 x 3ish outside and a bed inside the polytunnel too as yet undetermined in size. I've kept all my pea and bean haulms from this year so they will be dug in along with some comfrey and manure. Seeds will be sown this year, in the beast

I only found out what pea/bean halums were a couple of weeks agoi will be using those,a bit of bone meal,pot ash and plenty of muck

Here's my autumn planted sets. I'll also be doing spring planting sets and a couple of winter seed sowings.

I hope that working for 3CH (I buy a few bits & bobs from them) will help you give us some tips on lights (essential for getting a very early start) + perhaps some feeding tips.

Personally, I'm surprised that 3CH don't go for growing something(s?) like this to boost their profile more often, as when I mention growing giant onions, tomatoes, marrows, etc. in 3CH stores, I seem to get the idea I'm in the minority of their customer base.

 

Oh dear, way behind now, the chickens were destructive enough (Carol let's them "free range" over my veg plot) NOW she's got 4 DUCKS!!!!!!

I'll fence off what I can but it's looking like all my raised beds, plants and me will be moving up to our poultry free half allotment!
