Tesco's own brand vegetarian 'bacon' is on special offer at the moment, 2 packs for £3. Not as strong in flavour as the real thing (and I can still remember what it tastes like after 24 years), so best used between some milder tasting bread rather than a full flavoured loaf.

P.S. Whilst talking about vegetarian stuff, has anybody tried this new dry sausage mix from Asda?

    http://groceries.asda.com/asda-esto...1926051&startValue=&referrer=cookiesDetecting

Ever since the real 'Sosmix' (not that Gransose rubbish) disappeared I've been searching for a suitable substitute, because the 'old' recipe Sosmix made great sausage rolls and was also ideal for backpacking.

I don't think I'm going to quit meat, but rather just cut right down on it. I'm not sure about things like quorn and pretendy bacon, because they are like meat substitutes, so unless there's a medical reason or personal principle that says no meat, may as well eat meat as a meat substitute, but that's just my opinion of course, each to their own:)

For me, I have a history of ailments of the digestive system. I've been admitted to hospital a handful of times over the years with acute abdominal pains, and once had to have a camera shoved down my pie hole to see what was up with my osophagus. On each occasion I was told firmly, 'cut right down on meat, especially red meat and processed meats'. Only once did I get told to actually quit meat altogether, mostly the advice has just been to cut right down. I've decided now its time to take that advice.

To that end, I've come up with a plan. I'm fundamentally a stubborn, lazy man, so will slip into old habits easily unless I make a rigid plan. I'm going to start by imposing a certain day of the week to be 'fish day'. Friday seems as good a choice as any. Then another day to be no meat of any kind day. If I do that, then I'll probably stick to it, and gradually I can adapt the plan as I become more adventurous and experimental with my cooking. Of course I'll have to teach the wife some more. The poor lass has never been blessed in the kitchen department, but over the years I've trained her to make a reasonable curry:)

How about for a nice and healthy weekly, reduced meat menu?

Monday - Veggie curry & rice
Tuesday - Home made vegetarian pizza & salad
Wednesday - Tuna/salmon/mackerel pasta and home made garlic bread & salad
Thursday - Quorn chicken and mushroom pie, with peas, etc.
Friday - Fish and Chips! (+ onion rings)
Saturday - Quorn/veggie burgers in baps with cheese, fried eggs, onion, served with salad.
Sunday - Quorn 'Family Roast' and/or vegetarian 'toad in the hole' with roastie potatoes, parsnips, onions, squashes, and runner/french beans/peas/cabbage/caulis & veggie gravy.

+ Spanish omelettes, quiches, fish pies, sweet & sour dishes, etc.

Quorn pretend chicken (style pieces) makes very nice pretend chicken & mushroom [1] pies and pretend sweet & sour chicken with stir fried veg.

[1] Loads of free field mushrooms about at the moment.

If veggies are averse to meat
            WHY
do they eat pretend sausage, pretend bacon, pretend chicken breast, pretend pork chop and pretend salmon

Why not WOW dried breadcrumbs soaked in boiled cabbage water, with some sliced green beans tonight
Or burnt bread, spread with sour milk and a side order of lettuce

There's a lot of vegetarian cows (are there any other kind? ) in the field behind me and they all certainly look overweight, if not downright obese.

Do you think I should throw some sausages over the wall to them to help them slim down? :dunno:

                Is there pretend Salmon?

Its down to the marketing people. When I first went veggie you couldn't pop into the supermarket & buy vegetarian protein whatsoever.

I bought soya mince from the health food shops & turned that into sausages or burgers, which are at the end of the day not exclusive to meat products, they are only shapes suitable for cooking.

About the mid eighties, the supermarkets realised that they were missing out on 4 million customers so they started to produce "Vegetarian" products. One of the first that I remember was Sainsbury's Quorn pie, a blooming great family sized pie.

My GF at the time cooked one up for lunch & got really cross when I said I couldn't eat it as it tasted too much like Moo Moo.

A few months later I watched the news as a bloke from Sainsbury's tried to backtrack & justify why they had labled it as vegetarian when they were filling it full of beef extract, saying they had only marketed it as a healthy alternative. (Why did it have suitable for vegetarians on the box then?

First vegie sausages I remember being available were Kosher "Tivall" Hot dogs, frozen in the health food shops at first, but then the supermarkets took them on & then coppied them.

Taste just like meat hot dogs, which shows you just how much meat is in the originals.

I'd happily buy a product that was just labeled Quorn protein or Soya protein, but supermarkets insist on calling them Chicken or Bacon "Style"

Its just a name or a shape, I don't want the flavour of an animal. Just want something to get my teeth into.

Probably wouldn't sell so well if they called it "Corpse style soya chunks"

                  Fake Salmon
I do not know the full reciepe but about 45 years ago my pals mum turned veggie
for tea we had fake salmon sandwiches and they were very good
The main ingredient was a tomato, but it tasted like salmon Not tomatoes ?

So there is something out there, just need to find it

I've always assumed vegetarian products sold here are given as specific meat alternatives as so many (most?) people in the UK start eating meat before they become vegetarian, so 'Protein XYZ' or 'Soya 123' etc. would be meaningless to them.

Qourn did produce 'salmon' & dill fish cakes, but I think they're discontinued along with the 'tuna' and sweetcorn crispbakes (found loads of the latter reduced to pennies in Asda, not particularly good, but our daughter who doesn't eat real fish enjoyed them)

Me too, as I find the bought pre-made Quorn sausage rolls rather dry and not nearly so tasty.
