Hiya jenny. I've been digging up tender stuff, cutting back etc and it suddenly looks quite bare. I have a lot of hellebore orientalis that Im cuttiing leaves off. In a few weeks though they will emerge with coloured fat buds and it's quite exciting. As you know, they send up their flowers in different colours, some single some double. My tender perennials are in between these hellebores. I guess I could post some pictures then?? I have an Acer flamingo that was amazing a few days ago and, throughout summer.....pink, white leaves...but now starting to drop its leaves. I cut it back to ground level soon and it grows to 6' to 8' and 8' across each year. Hope you are well Jenny

I'm extremely well thank you Verdun. But I'm a wussy fair weather gardener (naughty) and I'm not looking forward to this swathe of cold air about to smack us in the face tonight. Spent too much time this year staring out of the window awaiting the arrival of Summer. Where has this year gone?

Finally got round to seiving the three ton of mixed pebbles and top soil (June)
So I now have about two ton of seived top soil on top of my veg bed in a big pile
Next job is to chuck the six bags of HM on it and dig it all level
Move pebbles after washing, onto the side of the drive way

Hope to get it done over the weekend as at the moment the ground is frosted all day and this evening at 19:45 it is Minus 2c

Moved my fuchsia cuttings from the greenhouse into the front porch, taking the flowers off them whilst in the process - - incredible to see how they have come on since pinching those wee cuttings at the end of August. I got a few pics of some that were in flower before I whipped the flowers off:

        IMAG0143.jpg

        IMAG0147.jpg

        IMAG0148.jpg

        IMAG0149.jpg

I had a few that had got really quite big and were overdue nipping out, so I took the opportunity to take a chunk off the top of them, and then put the top bits into some compost to see if they come - the cuttings have been placed with a few that were looking a bit sickly (which I re-potted into some nice fresh seedling compost) into the SPCA (Special Plant Care Area) aka my sideboard at the back of the living room :snork:

I then went on to re-pot my baby cheese plant, as it was pot bound and clearly not happy; and then an aloe vera that has been languishing in the front porch also got re-potted. Finally, I put some canes in beside my passion flower which has come on leaps and bounds from such a small plug, and is apparently quite happy in the porch.

Tomorrow, after work, I intend to get the rest of the baby perennials out of the greenhouse and into the porch (some of them want some fresh compost too), and then I am going to get my bags and baskets of begonias brought in to dry out.

Hopefully this coming week, I will get to lift my dahlias, get the borders dug over and get my daffy bulbs in.

Hiya jack. One end of the country tp the other. Not so cold here....been dampish cloudy morn but better in pm and "hot" at about 13 degrees. Sounds like you're going to have great veg next year with all that top soil and manure!

Jack, on a need to know basis, he doesn't need to know too much.
Just give him the basic facts Jack....;)

Hello fat controller.....I used to like you in Thomas the tank engine! I'm in sunny Cornwall. Temperature this evening has plummeted to about 6 degrees I think but we are promised a sunny weekend aren't we? Think it will be colder again by morning.

This is a busy time of year in our garden. Lots of clearing up and cutting back :blue thumb: and months of clearing leaves .

We shall also cut the leaves off our masses of hellebore orientalis - don't want the slugs hiding under them.

Three weeks ago we started cutting back some of our laurel hedging and it has already started to sprout new leaves.

              P1140032.JPG
We had to dig out a lot of 4" rooted parts to clear in front of the hedge.
              P1140031.JPG

And have started moving along and cutting back more.
              P1140030.JPG

              P1140033.JPG

We're also working our way around the other side of the laurel. So we shall end up with more area to plant flowers both sides.
              P1140034.JPG

We've only just started to tidy the flower beds and leaving it clearer for the winter and spring flowers to come through.
              P1140036.JPG

We've also cut back some of the ivy on the house and removed a load of wisteria where it had started creeping into the loft. We try to keep the top 1ft of wall clear of growing things (mice get into the loft) but don't always keep on top of it.
