The wife has put that irritating X-Factor program. I'm not paying attention but one bit just broke through my concentration barrier.

A young lady judge was giving some constructive criticism to yet another talentless contestant. She was being nice about it, and then some chap from some failed 1990s boy band who somehow is qualified to judge, turned round and on live TV, said to the young lady, 'I don't know what offends me more, what you've just said, or your cigarette ash breath'.

Call me old fashioned, but if I'd have been present when he said it I'd have been duty bound to take the lad outside to discuss the issue. I was always taught that you just don't speak to a lady like that. Ok, it can happen in the heat of a massive row, but not in a calm discussion and certainly not in front of anyone.

I'd have taken him outside to discuss the issue also, with Mr Snuggles, the baseball bat

I get up and walk away from more TV than I watch these days. I refuse to let their tack get into my mind,

I don't watch X-Factor or, for that matter, very much TV at all. Wife does though, and that means as much as I ignore the thing (the telly that is) sometimes bits of it get through.

If I was to blatantly insult one of my colleagues in front of everybody, I'd fully expect to get done for it. Possibly even sacked. In every employment contract I've seen, that sort of behaviour would qualify as gross misconduct punishable by summary dismissal. Yet because it was ITV, and it was some two bit 'celebrity' from a failed boy band, somehow its acceptable. Once it caught my attention, I looked round and watched for a minute. The young lady maintained her professional composure, but it was quite clear to see the hurt on her face.

I'd boycott the telly in protest, but the trouble is its in our living room, and at this time of year its not always nice to retreat to the garden:)

And they wonder why today's "young" are so rude and disrespectful. They are fed junk like this from a very young age. I cannot believe anyone wants to watch stuff like Eastenders or Coronation Street. What a pathetic load of tosh,

Slightly digressing, but what makes people watch such programmes? It's a known fact that the people "judging" are egotistical, self admiring, arrogant in their nature and behaviour. It's not the first time on such a program where the "Judges" have behaved in an arrogant obnoxious way. Do people actually watch the program because they enjoy watching them behave like that?
If you watch a program where you know the people judging are what they are and they behave in the predicted nasty way, how can you be offended and surprised??. I don't watch programs where self professed "experts" or artists are allowed to be "off the leash" to denigrate other people and their talents. There are two emotions that I get just from thinking about it though, one is sympathy for the victim and embarrassment for the "Judge", and us for allowing the idiot to get away with it.

I don't think its a case of 'wanting' to watch, but rather being conditioned to do so as there is little else on.

Its all done to make people watch the show, if everyone was nice, nobody these days would watch.
Have you noticed modern quiz games are about setting one contestant against the other, the nastier they are to one another the more the audience likes it, or so it seems.

People are very aggressive these days in their daily lives and that has been carried on into TV programmes.
When was the last time you saw a "cuddly toy" as a prize.
You either win masses of cash or walk away empty handed.

Oh, come on now, FC!!!!, being "conditioned" to do things you don't want to is not my mental picture of you!!:heehee:
Watching a program that irritates, repulses, or offends is something you just don't do unless you want to be irritated, repulsed or offended!! If there's nothing on the Box I'm sure you could find better projects that that!!

Believe me Armandii, I am not one of those who are conditioned to watch - I may not be the brightest star in the sky, bit even my meagre intelligence level allows me to make sensible decisions ;)

However, there are many who believe that they should partake in the tradition of Saturday night telly, regardless whether it is a load of moo poo or not.

It is quite concerning however, that the more alleged 'choice' there is; the less there is that is fit to watch. It is a rare occasion that I will pay anything more than a passing glance to TV nowadays

I totally agree with you, FC. Which is why I said that is not my mental picture of you, and why I don't picture you watching something you don't want to.:snork: I must admit that in earlier years when the family was watching something that I couldn't abide I would stay awhile just to be sociable but in the end I would find something else to do.
