We've been forecast 2c tonight. I'm in denial - it can't get that low yet - can it ? Iit's still October - too soon for all this chilly night stuff ...:nonofinger:

Going to be warm again next week (here), but I've taken my Nanas up anyway as they are sopping wet and need to dry out before the Winter storage ... however, I think leaving tender things out as long as possible is best

I leave them ... I don't want them wet & cold, but any time into December I reckon is fine. Some years we don't a proper frost until then anyway :blue thumb:

I'm going to fleece my Dahlias for the next two nights in the hope of nursing them through these couple of cold nights as they are flowering fit-to-bust at present. Not tried that before though, but in previous years they have carried on after the first light frost (in early Autumn the temperature doesn't drop to zero until dawn, and then is rising again almost immediately, and that doesn't seem to blacken them, its a longer freezing spell that does that to them I think). We are only forecast +3C minimums, but the weather forecast's idea of a single temperature to forecast is pretty useless in my experience; last Winter I started monitoring a new Met Office forecast that had "Range" figures, but they were equally useless - Day Max actual was nearly always above their Day Min/Max range and my actual Min was frequently below the night Min/Max range. I logged their forecast range figures against my actuals for a couple of months and then stopped using the Range forecast as that turned out to be just as useless as the single figure they give. I had hoped that their Min/Max range for the night would set the Min to the most "reasonably pessimistic" value they envisaged, but the fact that their Night Min was warmer higher-than-actual 90% of the time meant it was of no use to me at all. (Not in a frost hollow here, my weather station tallies pretty much identically with all the others on Wunderground within a 20 mile radius, if anything my Winter night Min's are a degree warmer than the ones around me)

I worry about whether to leave my dahlias in or take them out. I usually do a bit of both.

When I was younger I was always taught that a garden is like a relationship - care and give it love and it will grow. As I grew older - I found that that was not always true for relationships, and gardens can also be rebellious at times as nature does often have its own way too.

Don't worry about your garden - just enjoy it!

There is only so much you can do in your garden.:help: You can cover everything and generally try to help the plants survive,:) but there is always something that will come along and catch you out.
I have had quite a few gardens, different sizes, different climates, all have been a pleasure, some from scratch, others just needed titivating . :heehee:

I dread to think how much we have spent over the years,:oopss: Still, it's better than wasting it on frivolous things !

It's always been best when I have grown my own from seed. The moment the first green shoot emerges, nature is such a wonderful thing. Just imagine a Sequoia starting as such a little shoot, it's magic. :psnp: It's sad when the season's change, I know it's the way things are, it just seems to go so quickly.

I hope next year, gives us a better chance of producing our lovely fruit and vegetables.:please:.
