Tomato Growing Thread 2012

Picked/cut a couple of trays of ripe/unripe toms today because they would otherwise be frosted tonight, which should ensure ripened toms well into November.

 

Gone rather quiet on this thread, so a bit of info. on tomato seed saving.

Despite what most people say about seeds saved from F1 tomato seeds not coming true, it can be done with some F1 varieties that are known as 'pseudo hybrids' where an open-pollinated variety is crossed with a disease-resistant hybrid then back crossed with the non-disease resistant parent until it become identical to it but has the disease resistance. This is why seeds saved from 'F1' Sweet 100, Supersweet 100 and Sweet Million will come true.

It's quiet here on the tomato front,greenhouse cleared and this is the last of themcan't believe i've got to wait 8 months for a tomato sandwich....

The last of my toms (and the slow cooker is full of them making pasta sauce at the moment):

 

Those large ones on the white plate have tons of character Scrungee. Were they grown outdoors and what variety please?

 

They were salvaged from outdoor plants being being chucked out as they'd got blight and all the green ones were mixed up together, most eaten as fried green tomatoes, and some left to ripen for cooking. I'm not sure what they are, but think they're German Red Strawberry, Marianna's Peace and Mortgage Lifter, none of which had grown to full size. I also managed to save ripe or almost ripe ones from everything I was growing, so used those for seed saving and the flesh in cooking. Our hens also had their fair share of squishy ones.

My last tomato of the year. The Striped German did finally ripen.

 

Last year I still had a colander of Sungold toms for tea on Boxing Day, but I don't think they'll last that long year http://gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/threads/tomato-taste-test-again.37163/page-4#post-471054

I still reckon that Sungold are the best variety for picking green before the first frosts and ripening off indoors for not going soft or losing flavour.

I'm just annoyed now that I've composted all my non-blighted tomato plants

 

I've been looking at tomato seeds for next year and considering one of the following two amongst others. Has anyone any experience of Tamina and/or Alicante please.
