My kids both wanted to play the recorder when very little. This progressed to the flute and piano. Their social lives now revolve around friends they have made not only at school but in various groups, which means their horizons have expanded quite widely, they also travel both in this country and abroad. I am so glad I bought them the instruments - the only downside is the taxi driving to the lessons/ orchestras :)

Go for it Clueless or in years to come you may regret it. My son showed early signs of an ear for music and now I am the proud Mum of a son that manages a very succesful folk band. Get the ear plugs in ready!!!!!!

I used to play and sing on stage what I thought was pop music But I had the wrong genere It must have been FOLK music because when I walked on everyone shouted

          Oh Folk

Clueless Buy It For The Wee Chap. If He is interested/enthusiastic/Keen ,go for it.:blue thumb:.
The Ukulele has 4 strings and is a much more smaller instrument than the Guitar.
The most common Acoustic Guitars have 6 Steel Strings. My Recent Purchase Is a 12 String Washburn, which is a Fantastic instrument.
My one bit of advice is use nylon strings for a wee one 3-4 years as their finger tips are soft at that age and sore fingers can Deter Kids from future interest,as I have experienced with Lots of kids over the years.

We went back to Whitby today, and had another look in the same shop.

The lad went straight to look at the ukelele again, but he also spotted a kid sized guitar (actually was a guitar this time:) ). This means two things. Firstly, with a combination of his obvious interest and the helpful comments from you lot, my decision is made. Santa will bring him a guitar/ukelele. The other bit though is a bit of a dilemma. I now don't know whether to buy him the guitar or the ukelele. To me, the ukelele had a much nicer sound than the guitar he looked at, but the guitar looked more appealing to kids, being 'rock star' style, and painted up with cartoon characters as opposed to just looking like a tiny blue guitar.

I guess I'll figure it out which one to buy one way or another.

I also intend to see if I can find a music club of some sort for him to attend. He thoroughly enjoys any kind of social interaction, so maybe that could help nurture his apparent interest in a fun way.

                Get the Ukelele
It only has four strings so is easier to learn and play, the chords learned, are transferable later if using a guitar (As advised by "Music" get nylon strings and spares)
Schools are now teaching the Ukelele instead of the recorder, so you would end up getting a ukelele if he wanted to learn a stringed instrument in school time
(I am talking under 12 yrs old here once over twelve and IF your particular education authority still provides it then all instruments)

Having said that, I remember the disappointment one Crimbo when I woke up to find an expensive RED racing bike, I dreamed and wanted the cheaper BLUE one :-(

If there is a kid sized guitar then I would say definitely get that one. If he is really interested then it won't take him long to realise that the ukelele isn't a guitar at all.
Get the real thing, he can't be disappointed then!!

No need for the white lie:)

I'll tell him that once its bust, he's not getting a new one, and a guitar or ukelele is a divine gift.

I like the idea of builder a holder for it to mount it on his bedroom wall too.

I've been googling for music clubs for kids in the area. Being a small town, there's not much going on. That's always the case round here, so that gives me another project to think about. Its an idea I've been pondering for a while now. It occurs to me that there are things going on, but they are not well publicised because, well, I guess not everyone wants the overheads of building and maintaining a good website, and even those that do, they're all dotted about and inconsistent. I thought I might try to change that. I have a cunning plan:)
