I took my first driving test in South Carolina in 1967 and parallel parking was part of the test ... can't remember, but think you may have had three attempts? I did it in the first go in a monstrous Ford Galaxy so I'm pretty good at it. In Alabama the following year it was on a VERY steep hill and I manoevered that also. :yahoo: The States is 'not' united and you have to get a licence for the State you live in at the time.

            In France it's matterless.
All cars in Paris seem to have all 4 corners pushed in. Parallel parking isn't in the French vocabulary.

A few years ago now, my mam and step dad had borrowed my great uncle's car for a few days, and had now finished with it. My step dad had to work the day we agreed to take it back, so my older sister and I volunteered to do it.

It involved a 30+ mile drive on a range of conditions from little town streets to a busy dual carriageway.

This was the plan, my sister would drive our great uncle's car, I'd follow in mine, and then we'd all come back in my car.

About 5 minutes after getting up to speed on the dual carriageway, it became apparent that the slightly worn wheel bearing that the mechanic had assured me was good for at least 10,000 miles before it needed replacing, had failed completely. The car was shaking about all over the place and squealing like a pig. Not wanting to let the side down, I dropped back to about 40mph and limped it all the way.

We arrived at the great uncle's house, got out, and my sister, who'd passed her test a good 5 years before me, was visibly stressed. Apparently our great uncle's car was hard to drive. She simply couldn't put it on the drive, despite the drive being wide enough for two cars, it was just too tight a fit, and would I do it?

To me, it was a pleasure, just for a moment to drive a car with all four wheels firmly attached, so having never driven great uncle's car before, I zipped it on no messing.

Unlike my father that he could park as straight as a pin in the tiniest of spaces, i failed my driving test on that ....

Neither my wife or my daughter can park. In fact reversing a car in general. They ain't too hot going forward either.
Just accept it ladies, driving is not your strong point ;)

We have to give the ladies some credit though. There are the odd one or two that can drive, a bit...

Harumph, parking is not the same as driving in general. And it's by no means proven we're bad at either.

Maybe not Madahhlia, however it forms a large part of the skill of driving. Bit like saying 'take off and landing is not the same as flying in general' ;)
