Its that time of year again, when our evenings are blighted by pops and bangs all over the place, with the inevitable result that household pets are scared witless - our poor wee Smudge is snuggled up as tight as can be to me, with his head poking through under my arm, I presume because he is feeling the need for a bit of security due to all the noises.

I'm not against fireworks as such (in fact, I love to see a well organised display), but every year it bewilders me that people will go and spend considerable sums of money to literally send up in smoke - more odd than that, we have retailers being allowed to sell explosives to people to take home with them.

Properly organised displays - great, but domestic fireworks?? I just don't see the sense.

I don't mind the 'domestic fireworks'....but not at least 2weeks before and 2 weeks after the 5th of November....what's all that about:scratch:

Thats the biggest problem with them, its no longer confined to one day, it goes on for weeks and weeks. Round our way, Diwali also brings us the same (if not more so), so we end up getting it twice over.

Well I live in a small village, but there have been fireworks going off every night for the past week.

What it must be like in a City I can only picture the opening pages of "Natures End":hate-shocked:

fred.JPG Yeah, it's been the same for us, at the moment there are some big booms and bangs going on outside, seems as though it's only a few yards away.:gaah:

My little Fred is hiding under my chair, trembling, I hope we don't have too much of this. :th scifD36:

I am not against fireworks per se, i have on occasions been to shows, but do not think even when my own children were small we did our own thing(No1 son was petrified as a little boy) :cry3:Just hope it does not go on too late, otherwise Fred likes to hide between our pillows in the bed.

As 'abuse' seems to be the 'in' word at the moment, couldn't we complain that we are being abused by noise!!!!

I love this time of year, fireworks included - but then, i haven't got any pets to worry about.

There are loads going off right now.

There has seemed to be less of them the last few years. Maybe the recession kicked in. We get loads of Asians setting them off too, weddings and suchlike. The Diwali fireworks have been much more strictly controlled recently. Years ago the Diwali fireworks were a complete free-for-all with people setting them off in huge crowds of people with kids everywhere. Fun but very dangerous. That's all been stopped now, with no casualties that I am aware of.

I remember driving along the M5 through Birmingham one year - it was like floating on a cloud of smoke with fireworks going off in all directions. Fab.

It's been unusual quiet round here this year, until tonight. It sounds like a war zone out there tonight.

I wonder if that's a coincidence, when Yorkshire Trading was open til 7PM last night, selling boxes of fireworks at more than 50% off. I saw one massive box in there, RRP £40, being sold for a tenner.

It is really awful round here now - the last series of bangs had him running up the back of the couch and literally trying to climb up the wall; this was obviously a non-starter, so he then decided that he wanted to be my scarf and proceeded to wrap himself round my neck, before sliding down my (bare) chest using his claws as brakes.

He has now squeezed into a tiny gap between me and the arm of the sofa, and I am sat with a map of red lines all over my chest.

I've passed on the cuddles, but he still ain't happy bless him.

I love to see fireworks, always did, but I don't like what they do to pets and I don't like how they are often used in an anti-social way nowadays (I am fully expecting this to carry on until after midnight tonight); I must be showing my age.

Just to throw in a flipside.

A few gardens away from us, two very yappy dogs live. They live outside in all weather. I think they have a kennel, but still, they are left outside even when the weather is awful.

They are outside tonight, with all the fireworks going off all around.

The poor mites must be terrified. I really wish there was some legal controls about how to look after dogs, or any animal for that matter.

Our neighbours on one side keep their dogs in a sort of kennel (back end of the garage partitioned off, with a courtyard area outside it); while they clearly look after the dogs very well indeed, and the dogs seem happy enough, I don't like the idea of them being out with only a corrugated roof for protection on nights like this; goodness knows how they get on when the temperatures really plummet in winter - I assume (hope) that there is some form of heat supplied for them.

It also strikes me as a little odd - its not as though they are working dogs, they are just pets, so why keep them out of the house and only see them for a couple of hours per day? I thought the whole idea of a pet was the companionship etc.

                Takes all sorts I suppose.

Then again, I am sure that there are many people that would (rightly) think that I am completely mad giving our wee man a duvet for his bed, which lives right next to my side of our bed (and on exceptionally cold nights, he has been known to sneak in under our duvet at our feet and nick some heat) - maybe I'm too soft.
