Good luck to you Nick, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
I went on a weekend bricklaying course 7 years ago, just to learn the basics, there were about a dozen of us on Saturday but only 6 by Sunday. The instructor said it always happens, people knock themselves up - it's physically quite tough - but you are used to hard work so I'm sure you'll be OK.
Here's a couple of simple things I built on the weekend, a bit of a garden wall with a couple of piers:
                    Picture(16).jpg

It could even take my weight!
                    Picture(18).jpg

Note: most vital bit of equipment for me (with a bad case of knobbly knees) are knee protectors plus of course mandatory flask of tea nearby.

Let us know how you get on.

We used lime mortar so each thing we built was knocked down, mortar scraped off and re-used for the next lesson, here's another thing I built:

Cor I wish I had the skill for that
I just had to spend this years cruise money on a wall, 4' high, double brick x 12 mtrs
                        £2500,

I should have done a course, I have no idea how they get the right amount of mortar so the bricks are evenly spaced, that is the skill I expect, some way of knowing an exact amount for each brick

SWMBO says I think we should just replace the wall ourselves, So I says fine only I thought it would come out of the home budget NOT MY Holiday fund or keepie back money :-) I have named the wall after the ship we never went on and am busy making a plaque

Folly Mon, that is absolutely FUNtastic news!!!! :hapydancsmil:

It is *never* too late to learn something new. I graduated from Uni in July but my journey began with a 6 weeks "Women Returner's" course at our local college (aimed at women who had been out of the work place for x amount of time) who knew it would end in a degree? :heehee:

You are going to have a great time because you'll be there because you *want* to be - there is nothing more motivating than that! Can't wait to hear how it all works out for you and the people you are going to meet who you can skill share with ;)

                          Love it! :dbgrtmb:
