    Hi,

My name is Rich, I'm a student at Loughborough University. I'm currently undergoing some research for a degree project and I would greatly appreciate anyone (who may own or interact with a garden or plants on a regular basis) willing to spare a couple minutes to fill out my survey:

    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6WCCLZ5

    Thank you

Done, but seems to be an innocuous choice of questions.

I believe one of the conditions that a Survey is allowed, Harry, is that no incentive is offered.:snork:

Done but I agree with gcc. Rich should have had a gardener help compile the questions. Some didn't give correct options. Should have run a spell check over it :)

My thoughts exactly when I saw it. Do Admin get to see these surveys before they're posted?

:snooze: I was sleeping nicely there as well, Jenny.!!!:snork: Well, to be honest, I don't think that Rich's spelling is that bad considering he has only mis-spelled the word vegetation, while I'm certain that I, and others, have posted with spelling, grammar mistakes ourselves.:dunno::snork:
As regards the nature of the questions we have no idea of the limitations of the project that Rich has been set. If he has been asked to analyse how different ages of people regard and use/store water in the garden and what methods they use then, innocuous as the questions seem to be, I would say he has covered the subject fairly well. Regarding as to whether the correct options were given is arguable as, let's face it, some of the surveys that Local Authorities and Commercial Organisations put out are infinitely worse. I agree though that the advice of a competent gardener would have helped Rich in the composition of the Survey, but again we don't know Rich's circumstances.
People submitting Survey's should first ask the permission of the Webmaster. However, that doesn't always happen and Admin will, as in this case, withdraw the Survey for consensus as to whether or not the survey is not commercially linked, has other motivations other than that expressed in the survey, and is "innocent" in purpose. Having reached a consensus that the survey is fit for posting we will release it while also sending a message to the originator reminding him/her that they should always ask for permission to submit it.:snork:

          Well said, ARMANDII :blue thumb:

This appears to be an innocent survey as it seems to be rather innocuous.

Questions like the one about how often do you water and with what do you do it (can't remember the options given) are dependent upon time of year, weather conditions, where the plants are and how much you have to do. Therefore a gardener's advice would have been able to elicit usable information.

I had a look. It didn't seem very well put together to me. No offence to the the students, but I think some of the surveys we get on here highlight a worrying lack of the careful planning and attention to detail that's absolutely essential when undertaking any research exercise.

With a questionnaire, inevitably the questions influence the reader. This can't be entirely avoided. Because of that, purely chosen or poorly worded questions can result in a very misleading result.

For example if I say 'How much do you agree with this: Fish and chips are expensive these days', (strongly disagree... indifferent ... strongly agree),

You will get a different trend than if you said:

What do you think about the current price price of fish and chips (cheap... just right.. expensive).

The first version subliminally suggested that the correct answer is 'too expensive', so the result will show a string bias towards that answer, when in fact people might generally think otherwise.

Sorry for the rant, but it just seems sometimes people rattle out these things without even pausing for thought or proof reading them. If professional companies did this when researching their market, there'd be a lot more businesses biting the dust, because they'd be acting on completely misleading market intelligence.
