Another bad night last night - seem to be worse when lying down (although that is pretty normal for me when I am having a bit of a flare up); bit better today though - keeping moving is definitely helping. I am going to try a different tack tonight, see if I can't get some decent sleep - I've got one of those self heating pad things that wraps around the body, so I am going to shove that on before going to bed with a nice hot mug of cocoa and a wee last program on the TV, and hopefully I will drop off and stay there.

I won't be making any claim though - firstly, I cannot stand this claim culture that this country has nowadays (its only a sore back for a few days after all), and secondly because my company is pretty much self insured, so claiming would only mean that I was biting the hand that feeds me - not my style either.

I was not meaning a financial claim against your employer FC

What I was trying to say was, If you ended up where you have to take time off to heal yourself, then if the company knows that you were hurt whilst working, most companies will continue paying you, Some companies, if they know you had a previous condition will blame that and stop payment whilst you are off

Ah, I see - thankfully, I am lucky on two counts there Jack; my boss was out working with us on Saturday, so knows what happened first hand, and my company treats everyone very fairly when it comes to sick pay etc, so I've no worries there.

Having said that, I am not one for taking time off work (I'm one of those daft blighters that will drag themselves into work no matter what - if I can walk, I can work)

I was like that, then with a headache at work I woke up in the Stroke Recovery Unit a week later
The company sent a bunch of grapes, with the nice man, who handed over the grapes, then took my company car off the family :-) ( 28yrs svc)

Other than when totally unable I still dragged myself to work

So there are times when you need to take care

I'm afraid I'd never trust an employer.

After 10 years in the same company, I remember repeated assurances that the latest merger or the latest 'streamlining initiative' would not affect our team. I remember getting excellent annual reviews, put in charge of more and more projects and people, generally praised and assured that the latest financial statement was great etc. Then one day, within a week of getting an email saying net profit for our division was £16.8 Million for that year, forecasted to rise to £17.9 Million the following year, we all got put on notice that we were formally 'at risk' of redundancy.

In the next job, the boss offered a couple of us a significant pay rise, then shares in the company, then he did a runner having not paid us for the last 3 months.

I'm afraid that if I've learned one thing about business, its that businesses built on honesty and truth very rapidly fail, and therefore successful business folks, while maybe trustworthy in all aspects outside of work, can't really be trusted in work.

If anyone needs any more proof of the successful business attitude to people, just think about this. When exactly did the staff stop being people and start being 'human resources'?

I think it's great to be in a job where you feel valued and can trust your colleagues, but at the end of the day, if the company leaders think they'd benefit from shafting you, then all the kind words and banter counts for exactly nothing.

The moral of my very pessimistic sounding story is not that all bosses are secretly bad. The point is that you should ALWAYS put yourself way before the company, because you can be absolutely certain that the company will put the company before you.

                          Thoroughly rotten bar-stewards!

You are right, of course - and I will, I promise (coz I know that I will only get a clip round the ear from Jenny, Mum or Loli if I don't )
