Rooting cutting in November

Long story made short , I got lots of cutting that need to be rooted , that include plumeria , bromeliad , cactus and so on.

Used rooting hormone , left in perlite with water and all in the heated propagator ......

anyone have a better method?

 

I find perlite to dry for my cuttings this time of year but I don't have a better option that wouldn't also significantly increase the risk of rot

 

Possibly with the exception of the bromeliad I think they could all be safely left until spring before trying to root them.

 

I don`t use perlite , more of cat litter (does the job in stile) cheapper.

Worked before with aloe e few cactus but non sure about the bromeliad variety and plumeria ...

Yes and then realise that is November ....got a bag full of seeds as well
and I`ve got New Zeland as well

 

Would some supplemental (artificial) lighting help perhaps?

 

Really!? I could use some of my cat litter? Any particular brand?

Just read: perlite is a non-renewal resource.

Apparently been used in gardening for a while by those "in the know" , here's a link about it being used as an ideal bonsai growing medium;

I didn't say it wouldn't work.
But growing on is difficult now and rotting of the cuttings is more likely also.

Plus I also think, if kept cool and reasonably dry they will keep until conditions are better, if they do make any new growth, once rooted, at this time of the year, its likely to be very poor.

 

That the one I use the tesco light , just wash it , It actually perfect for bonsai , seedling , I even used it at the base of cactus just to let the roots breath .

 

Does anyone know the pH of this cat litter I was thinking on the lines of using as a medium for orchids

 

basicly it`s puffed clay , it should be a ph of zero , but as you need to wash it before use it , the tap water will chance the ph to ph5/7 I rekon ....It a cheap alternative to expencive perlite ...if it doesn`t arm the cats it shouldn`t arm the cat as well.

Are we saying that cat litter can be used instead of Perlite for any cuttings. And can it be used on its own. It is sometimes recommended to take cuttings in sharp sand by itself with no compost.
