Oh you are so kind with your thoughts and good wishes, much appreciated. I live in Fife not a million miles from St Andrews but a fair few miles form Ashford in Kent!!!!!! Fat Controller and yes my lum is reeking atm. Bet if that hallowed grass on the famous Old Course was being threatened something would be done PDQ! but a back road slightly in the middle of nowhere, nay chance.
To add even more gloom I was talking to a very knowledgeable forestry person today and he told me that it's estimated that 60% of Ash trees are already affected with this virus which would appear to have come from The Netherlands...Dutch Elm disease! and it could mean the destruction of anything up to 93 million Ash trees, can you believe it? Guess which species of tree is the biggest in my photo?...yup a massive Ash and I have about another 6 absolutely majestic specimens which are really really old. I do so hope they will survive as I've always thought they'd "see me out"! Maybe not. Anyway thanks again for your sympathy, something very nice to come out of something not!

Wee shame I'm not due to visit my lovely mum - she is only over the water from you in Musselburgh; and you are right, if the golf course was threatened, they'd be out with pumps and all sorts to clear it up.

Hope you lum keeps reeking through the coming months to keep you warm, and I'll keep my fingers crossed that some of your daffs and snowdrops survive.

PS - I'm in the 'other' Ashford, near Staines (not the posh one in Kent )

I lived near London for the 1st 20 odd years of my life altho Scottish by birth. Been "home" for over 30 years and weather aside (altho it isn't quite as bad as others may think!) I'm very happy living where I do apart from the ....... blocked burn!!!!

A quick up date for the kind souls who offered "tea and sympathy". Well council out again, this time with some camera thing to see if they could find the blockage, not a shovel in sight...funny that!.They were sort of busy the wrong end so poked my nose in and suggested they tried the right/other end where I'm certain it's blocked. "That end is submerged" came the reply. "Yes but you do have waders on so sure you poor things (slightly sarcastically) won't get wet" was my retort! !/2 hour later the men had disappeared and no improvement. Later a gritter dumped huge quantities of salt on the road AND my verge so if the bulbs don't drown they'll not appreciate being smothered in salt...sigh and oh yes road still a skating rink.

I think you have to throw a gritter over your shoulder to break the spell.

Another update and make that a round dozen black cats I've despatched. Burn still blocked and awoke this am to 6 inches of snow so chances of the council appearing between now and next April will be pretty slim...correction miracle!. Planning to advertise our road as a new curling rink and fear it's bye bye to all the plants/ bulbs which have now been under water/ice for over a week.Hey ho.
