    Roders,
There is a way people can find this out.
    http://www.petrolprices.com/
See how much you can save by looking around.
As we live out in the sticks, the prices are inflated local outlet is petrol £142.99 diesel £146.99 but go into the larger towns and this drops quite a lot.

I dont actually look at the price much these days I must admit.

I tend to fill it up, and it costs what it costs, not much you can do really, they know we need the stuff.
I use supermarket deals when possible, but when you look at how much you actually save, on something that is really dirt cheap without the tax, it makes you wonder where the government would get its money if we all refused to drive for just one week.

Always fill up at Asda when we do our big shop.
I reckon that the number of petrol stations has nearly halved since I started driving in 1968 . Mainly due to cheap supermarket petrol . I remember being able to afford 3 whole gallons on Thursday payday for about £1 ! If you bought 4 gallons you got a free glass !:hapfeet: We had Tigers in the tank and match the bank notes and green shield stamps !!! Petrol is so boring these days . :snork:

Unfortuately, the Asda's around here don't have Petrol Stations so the nearest Supermarket Petrol Station is Morrisons which are still running prices at a lot higher than where Roders is.:gaah:

Think our morrisons was 130.1. Still cost me a small fortune to fill up though :(

Must admit we are pretty much the same here and I think your prices have now crept up to ours except diesel is cheaper here. We need it so we use it, don't look at the price ... end of story!

I once stumbled across a petrol shop that was selling unleaded at something like 5p per litre less than my usual petrol shop, so I filled up there instead.

Normally my car does about 450 miles to a full tank. I know this because I always reset the mile thingy when I fill up, and I always fill up and run it til its in the red before filling up again. After filling up at the cheaper petrol shop, I only got about 350 miles, and the car ran like a three legged donkey for the entire time.

I'm not saying that's always the way it is, in fact I'm sure it isn't. Maybe I got some of the bad batch that was killing cars at the time, but it made me reluctant to seek out the cheapest ever again.

That said, I once crossed the pennines at night, in winter with my fuel warning light on, because the last petrol shop on the west side was asking nearly 20p per litre more than I knew the first petrol shop on the east side charged.

It may not be cheap petrol Clueless. It may be the fact you are running on the red. I was taught by my dad never to let it go below quarter full as the fuel tank will have sediment in the bottom that messes with the running of the car.

Your dad was spot on with that. When the tank runs nearly dry, the fuel pump sucks all the grot out of the bottom of the tank. Less of an issue on modern cars with plastic tanks, but more of a problem with older metal tanks where tiny particles of rust could end up in the bottom.

It also puts extra burden on the fuel pump, as it has to work harder as the level drops, and the engine management system has to work harder to keep the fuelling right as the pressure starts to vary as the dregs of fuel slosh about, causing varying load on the pump.

All this matters greatly if you like the car. I've hated mine since the first time I took it up to my piece of land, and realised I couldn't fit my dad's vintage rotavator in the back like I could with my old Volvo estate.

Just a thought. I have a petrol mower Clueless. The plastic can I fill it from has a small amount of sediment in the bottom, the only place that can come from is either the fuel tanks or the filling hose at the petrol station.

I don't know if its still true with modern additives, but it used to be the case that if you left petrol in a jerry can (even a plastic one) for several months, you'd find petroleum jelly in the bottom of the can.

I've not heard of that one. :) All that's in mine is the gritty sediment.

Modern unleaded petrol 'goes off' in things like my rotovators or brushcutter when they're not used for some time and needs siphoning off and replacing with fresh fuel. When I've had petrol in a can for a while I always empty it into Mrs Scrungee's car when it has some fresh fuel in for it to mix with, and very grateful she is too.
