Bat Plant

Has anybody know much about Bat Plants. After seeing a photo of my friend's Bat plant, I had to go and buy one.

Your friends looks like Tacca integrifolia or T.nivea. Which species have you bought?

This is the Tacca chantrieri that I grew..................


It can get very large. Mine was about a metre and a half across..............


It likes a bright spot, but not harsh direct sunlight. Mine was grown in a spot where it received later evening sun only. When in growth keep humidity levels high (mist daily), and every three days or so (once the largest leaves are approx 40cm long not including the stalk) trickle some water into the leaf axils. This will encourage flowering.
Keep the pot in a deep saucer and water from the bottom only to avoid tuber rot. I used multi purpose compost with the gel granules added, plus plenty of grit and sand too.

I gave mine away when I moved due to space issues and regret it now.

 

I got the black tacca and so far is doing ok even in winter , grow really quick and I was thinking of treat myself with a white one as well.

 

I brought the white one. Thanks for you tips.

Your reply times got me suspicious! As long as the garden soil isn't overly saline pop it in the garden in a shaded spot. Then let nature take its course. I guess that it'll bloom after your rainy season.

 

Suspicious.lol....the only thing dodgey about is my gardening expertise.lol
I have my bat plant under a few palm trees at the moment in a large pot. It is still a small plant but I cannot wait for it to flower.

 

You have the climate, so once that you're happy that the spot is right for it you can pop it in the ground. When it is planted, put a good mulch around it (or maybe white gravel) to help prevent too much evaporation.
