'Garlic Tax' may sound as stupid as window tax, malted barley tax, etc., but it still actually exists!

That six year sentence is probably about what he'd of got for smuggling opium into the UK.

Reading further I've discovered another couple of heinous crimes - ringbinder mechanism and industrial pipe fitting tax evasion.

I can see the sense in that. Garlic can be grown in Britain on a commercial scale, ginger can't. So let the ginger in, but tax the garlic, then it gives UK based commercial growers a chance to compete, in theory.

Yes but the garlic was coming from outside the EU. We and all other member states pay silly amounts of money into a big pot in the EU to be shared around in the form of subsidies and grants within the member states. Some chap was bypassing the EU system, so I would bet garlic growers all over the EU might be glad that someone who was doing them out of trade by smuggling from outside has been caught.

I should point out, I'm not a fan of the EU, and I wish I didn't have to pay tax:) I'm just try to be objective, because objective is something that the media almost never is.

Which is why I take great offense at paying subsidies for EU produced food that I neither buy nor eat because I grow most of my own stuff whilst subsidising everybody who buys their fruit & veg from supermarkets.

Which makes you the exception and not the rule. If the majority of UK residents grew their own, things would definately be different ;)

Indeed, it is a very unfair system. To be honest, I hate that by grand parents and many thousands of people like them went through hell to stop a European force from taking our country, just for some slimy ex solicitor turned PM to sign it over without a fight, but its the situation we have. While we're in this situation, I personally would prefer as much of the money as possible to stay in the EU rather than going to China. I have nothing against China, I just resent sending all our money there.
